You’ll study Foundations of Nursing Practice, Anatomy and Physiology for Nursing Practice, and Fundamentals of Evidence-Based Practice, while also exploring your professional identity through modules like Professional Development and Leading the Self: Leadership 1. This year is all about building the knowledge and mindset you need to succeed in nursing.

Alongside placements in real clinical settings, you’ll continue to develop your leadership skills with Leadership 2.

You’ll tackle Professional, Ethical and Legal Challenges in Nursing, complete a major project, and take Leading the Management of Change: Leadership 4. Modules like Developing Proficiency 7 and 8 and Preparation for Professional Practice make sure you’re ready to step into a nursing role with confidence and leadership potential.

Focus Areas: Adult nursing, holistic care, evidence-based practice, pharmacology & long-term condition management, leadership in healthcare.

Learning Outcomes: You’ll graduate ready to deliver safe, compassionate care, handle complex adult health needs, make evidence-based decisions, and lead teams or projects within healthcare services.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation): Approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), meeting UK pre-registration standards for adult nursing.

Reputation (Employability / Rankings): Leicester’s healthcare teaching is consistently highly rated for student satisfaction, including “teaching on my course” and “academic support” in the National Student Survey 2025.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Leicester, you won’t just sit in lectures — you’ll learn by doing. From day one, you’ll get hands-on experience in realistic healthcare settings, supported by modern facilities and expert guidance. The course is designed to build your confidence and skills so that by the time you graduate, you’re ready to step straight into professional nursing. You’ll learn in simulated environments, alongside real patients, and with peers from across healthcare disciplines, giving you the practical know-how and teamwork experience employers really value. Here’s how that works in practice:

  • Clinical Skills Unit: Practice nursing procedures safely using high-tech mannequins and simulation equipment, so you can build confidence before working with real patients.

  • Anatomy and Physiology Labs: Learn human anatomy hands-on in the medical school’s dissection rooms, giving you a deeper understanding of the body than textbooks alone can provide.

  • Real-world Placements: Spend around half of your course on placements in hospitals, community care, residential homes, hospices, and other adult care settings — getting real patient experience under the supervision of experienced nurses.

  • Variety of Placement Locations: Work with University Hospitals of Leicester, nearby NHS trusts, and even community-based care providers, helping you experience the full spectrum of adult nursing.

  • Professional Development Elective / Internship: In your third year, choose an elective or placement abroad through the Turing Scheme, giving you international exposure and broader professional insight.

  • Digital Support Tools: Use Leicester’s Blackboard platform to access placement guides, resources, and guidance — so you’re fully supported even off-campus.

  • Interprofessional Learning: Train and collaborate alongside other healthcare students (medicine, physiotherapy, etc.), preparing you for real-life teamwork in hospitals and clinics.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduating from Leicester’s MSci Nursing with Leadership (Adult Nursing) opens the door to a wide range of rewarding careers in adult healthcare. You’ll be fully prepared to step straight into professional practice as a registered nurse, but the leadership training you gain throughout the course also sets you up for early responsibility and management roles. Typical roles include staff nurse, charge nurse or team leader, specialist adult-care nurse, and eventually positions in nursing management or healthcare leadership.

Here’s how the programme supports your career journey and sets you up for success:

  • Dedicated employability support: The university provides guidance on building a Leadership Portfolio and career map, helping you showcase your skills and navigate your first steps in professional practice.

  • Strong graduate outcomes: Around 90% of Leicester graduates in allied health subjects are in work or further study within 15 months of graduating. Many start with salaries around £28,500, which tend to increase as you gain experience.

  • Pathway into the NHS and healthcare employers: With NMC approval, you’re ready to register as a professional nurse and work across hospitals, community care, and other adult-care settings in the UK.

  • Leadership and transferable skills: The leadership modules give you practical skills in team coordination, decision-making, and professional judgment — abilities that will help you progress quickly and excel in both clinical and management roles.

  • Flexible career growth: You can start on the frontline as a staff nurse, then move into specialist roles, supervisory positions, or even broader healthcare leadership, making this degree a strong foundation for long-term career success.

Further Academic Progression:
If you want to continue studying, the MSci gives you a great springboard into postgraduate programs in healthcare management, advanced nursing practice, or specialist clinical areas. Your leadership training makes you especially well-prepared for master’s courses in health management, hospital administration, or nursing specialisms.
