Program Overview

If you're curious about how food affects health—and want to make a real difference in people's lives—this course is a great fit. Bath Spa's Human Nutrition degree blends science, public health, and real-world skills to help you understand the relationship between diet, the body, and wellbeing, all while preparing you for a career that matters.

Curriculum Structure

Year One: Build your foundation

Your first year sets you up with the scientific essentials—think biology, biochemistry, and nutrition basics. You'll get hands-on in the lab, use real diet analysis tools, and develop your skills in research, communication, and digital literacy through modules like Introduction to Human Nutrition, Biological Molecules, and Practical Laboratory Skills. It's a solid start that builds both your confidence and capability.

Year Two: Apply what you’ve learned

In year two, you’ll begin to connect the dots between food, the body, and health. You’ll explore Human Pathophysiology and Nutrition, dig into how we analyse food in Food Analysis, and sharpen your research skills through the Research Skills for Human Nutrition module. You'll also begin looking at ethics, disease risk, and physical activity, preparing for placements and real-world work.

Year Three: Specialise and stand out

Your final year gives you the chance to go deeper and work more independently. You'll take on your own dissertation project and choose modules like Applied Sports and Exercise Nutrition, Epidemiology and Public Health, or Food Safety. It’s all about putting your skills into action—whether you're studying how diet links to disease, or exploring how nutrition can improve performance in sport or public health outcomes.

What makes this course really stand out is how much practical experience you’ll get alongside your academic learning. Right from your first year, you’ll be hands-on in professional labs, using real equipment and software that nutritionists use in the field. Whether you're analysing food samples, using specialist dietary software, or working on a project with real community impact, you'll be building skills that employers look for. And in your final year, you’ll have access to dedicated research labs to carry out your own independent study.

Plus, there’s the option to take a Professional Placement Year—a fantastic way to get work experience in health, food, sport, or education settings.

Here’s what that looks like in real terms:

  •  Access to specialist Food and Nutrition Labs on campus (low-hazard and microbiology labs, analytical suites, and more) where you’ll develop products, test food safety, and analyse nutrients

  •  Use of Nutritics dietary analysis software—an industry-standard tool you'll use across assignments, projects, and data modelling

  •  Final-year access to project labs and research spaces for your dissertation or independent investigations

  •  Opportunities to take a Professional Placement Year, giving you real-world experience between your second and third year

  •  Group projects that may involve working with local councils, businesses, or health organisations to apply your knowledge in a real context

  •  Field trips to local food producers or manufacturers, especially in modules like Food Product Development or Global Trends in Food Preservation

  •  Full access to the Newton Park Library, digital learning platforms, and quiet study spaces to support your coursework and lab work
