This degree blends the science of nutrition with the creativity of marketing, giving you the skills to understand how food impacts health and how to bring that knowledge to the marketplace. It’s perfect if you’re interested in health and food but also excited by the business side — whether that’s product development, consumer behaviour, or food communication.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
Your first year is all about building the basics in both nutrition and marketing. You’ll explore Human Physiology and Practical Skills, Introduction to Food and Nutrition, and Bioenergetics to get a solid grounding in the science of how our bodies use food. Alongside this, you’ll study Introduction to Marketing & Consumer Behaviour and Introductory Business Economics, so you can start connecting nutrition with real-world food systems and consumer choices.
Year 2
In your second year, you’ll go deeper into the science while developing business awareness. Modules like Macro- and Micronutrients and Nutrition Through the Lifecycle show how nutritional needs change over time, while Food Science & Technology and New Food Product Development let you apply your learning in practical, hands-on ways. At the same time, Marketing Strategy sharpens your skills in reaching and influencing consumers effectively.
Year 3
Your final year is where everything comes together. You’ll tackle advanced topics like Personalised Nutrition, Nutritional Epidemiology & Public Health, and Agrifood Communication & Behaviour Change, learning how nutrition and marketing can drive healthier choices at both individual and population levels. You’ll also complete a Research Project in an area that excites you, plus build career-ready skills through modules such as Data & Marketing Analytics.

Reputation (employability rankings)
Newcastle is part of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities, which means you’re learning from experts driving real change in nutrition and food systems. Graduates benefit from Newcastle’s strong industry links, modern facilities, and consistently high employability outcomes.
On this degree, you’ll constantly be putting theory into practice. From day one, you’ll be working in specialist labs and learning spaces designed to mimic real-world environments — from food-handling and sensory testing suites to consultation rooms where nutrition advice is practised. By the time you graduate, you’ll have the kind of hands-on experience that employers in food, health, and marketing are actively looking for.
Here’s how you’ll gain that experience:
Create your own food product: In the New Food Product Development module, you’ll team up with classmates to design, prototype, and test an innovative new product — just like you’d do in industry.
Train in specialist spaces: Use Newcastle’s dedicated nutrition facilities, including food-handling labs, consultation rooms, and sensory analysis booths, where you’ll explore how taste, texture, and consumer feedback shape product success.
Work in the lab: Through modules like Food Science & Technology and Macro- and Micronutrients, you’ll carry out experiments, analyse samples, and learn how to measure nutritional status in real lab settings.
Lead your own research: In your final year, your Research Project gives you the chance to investigate a topic you’re passionate about — planning the study, gathering and analysing data, and presenting your findings.
Optional placement year: You can extend your degree with a 9–12 month placement in a food, nutrition, health, or marketing organisation. Newcastle’s Careers Service and placement team will guide you every step of the way, from applications to interviews.
This degree really opens doors because it blends two powerful skill sets: the science of nutrition and the business of food marketing. That’s why graduates from this course don’t just end up in one type of role — they’re working in everything from food marketing and product development to public health, consumer insight, and communications. The mix of scientific understanding and industry-focused marketing makes you stand out to employers.
Here’s how Newcastle supports you and where this degree can take you:
Tailored career support: You’ll have access to Newcastle’s award-winning Careers Service, offering one-to-one guidance, CV reviews, interview coaching, and support in securing placements. For this course, the optional placement year is a huge advantage — giving you up to 12 months in the industry before you graduate.
Strong graduate outcomes: Around 90% of graduates from nutrition-related programmes are in work or further study within 15 months, with average salaries of £25,500 early on.
Industry connections: The degree is shaped by Newcastle’s own leading research in food and nutrition, and you’ll benefit from partnerships with organisations across the food and health sectors, especially if you choose the placement year.
Professional recognition: When you graduate, you’ll be eligible to apply for direct entry to the UK Voluntary Register of Nutritionists (UKVRN) — a mark of credibility that employers in nutrition really value.
Versatile career paths: Many graduates move into food marketing, consumer behaviour analysis, nutrition communication, health promotion, or even policy and regulatory work. The flexibility of the degree means you can adapt your career to what excites you most.
Further Academic Progression:
If you decide to keep studying, you’ll be in a strong position for postgraduate options such as Public Health Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Food Systems and Marketing, or even research degrees like an MRes or PhD. This pathway keeps doors open for both professional and academic futures.
