Program Overview

This 5-year program is perfect if you’re passionate about food, health, and science and want to build a strong career in the food and nutrition sector. Starting with a foundation year, you’ll gain the skills and confidence to succeed in degree-level study, then explore nutrition, food science, and public health in depth — topped off with a full year of real-world industry experience.

Curriculum Structure

Foundation Year (Year 0)
The foundation year helps you get fully prepared for university study. You’ll cover basics like nutrition, food science, and academic skills, giving you the confidence to start the main degree with a strong footing.

Year 1
Your first year introduces the fundamentals of food and nutrition. You’ll study Fundamentals of Food and Nutrition to understand how diet affects health, and Introduction to Food Science, where you’ll explore the properties and functions of food ingredients. Hands-on labs and development kitchens make learning practical and fun.

Year 2
Year two dives deeper into the science and applications of food and nutrition. In Food Processing and Preservation, you’ll learn methods to keep food safe and nutritious, while Public Health Nutrition shows how nutrition affects communities. Live projects with external partners give you the chance to solve real-world challenges.

Placement Year (Between Year 2 and 3)
This is your opportunity to step into the professional world. Previous students have worked with companies like Tesco, Unilever, and Premier Foods, gaining invaluable experience, building their CVs, and applying their knowledge in a real industry setting.

Final Year
Your final year brings it all together. You’ll develop new products in Advanced Food Product Development, study policy in Nutrition and Health Policy, and conduct independent research for your dissertation. By the end, you’ll have the skills and experience to launch a career in food and nutrition or continue your studies.
