One of the best things about studying Human Nutrition and Health at Sheffield Hallam is how much of it is practical. You won’t just be sitting in lectures — you’ll be learning in real-life settings, using professional tools, working on community projects, and getting a real taste of what it’s like to work in the field.
Everything is designed to help you build confidence and skills that employers actually look for. Whether you're doing lab work, running workshops, or going on placement — you’ll be learning by doing.
Here’s how it works:
Learn in purpose-built labs and kitchens
You’ll be working in spaces designed specifically for nutrition students — including food science labs, nutrition and physiology labs, development kitchens, and even a sensory evaluation suite where you can study how people taste and respond to food.
Use real tools that professionals rely on
From measuring body composition with bioelectrical impedance to using specialist diet assessment software, you’ll get hands-on with the same equipment used in nutrition and health careers.
Work on live projects with real impact
Throughout the course, you’ll take part in projects with actual clients and organisations. Students have delivered school workshops, created healthy menus for cafés, and run community food sessions — so you get experience that really means something.
Take a year out to work in industry
If you choose, you can do a paid placement year between your second and final year. It’s a great way to get your foot in the door, figure out what kind of role suits you, and build your CV.
Build your own professional portfolio
You’ll document everything you do — from projects to placements — in a digital portfolio you can show to future employers to prove your experience.
Work with others and feel supported
You won’t be learning alone. There’s loads of group work, discussion-based sessions, and one-to-one support available through the university’s Skills Centre and your tutors.
Graduating from this course means you’re ready to step into meaningful roles that really make a difference in people’s health and wellbeing. Many of our grads go on to work as nutritionists, public health practitioners, health promotion officers, or wellbeing consultants — just to name a few. With the skills and experience you’ll gain here, you’ll be well prepared to succeed in a range of health, food, and wellness careers.
Here’s how Sheffield Hallam helps you get there:
