Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Birmingham’s MPharm Pharmacy program is built around real-world experience — from clinical placements to hands-on lab work in state-of-the-art facilities. You won’t just learn about medicines in theory; you’ll practice counselling patients, formulating drugs, and making clinical decisions using the same tools and environments as professional pharmacists.

Students train in purpose-built labs, simulation suites, and clinical settings across all four years. You’ll work with practicing pharmacists, use digital tools to support prescribing decisions, and build your confidence through interprofessional learning with medical and nursing students. Here’s how Birmingham delivers experiential learning at every stage:

  • Formulation and clinical practice laboratories: Located in the Robert Aitken Building, these labs are designed for compounding, dispensing, and testing medicines.
  • Patient counselling suites: Simulated pharmacy environments where you’ll practice real-life consultations and communication skills.
  • Professional Experience Placements: Embedded throughout all four years, including time in community pharmacies, GP practices, and hospital settings.
  • Digital prescribing tools: Used during clinical modules to support decision-making and simulate real-world prescribing scenarios.
  • Group projects and interprofessional learning: You’ll collaborate with medical and nursing students on case-based learning and shared clinical simulations.
  • Research project in final year: Supervised by academic staff, often linked to active pharmaceutical research within the College of Medical and Dental Sciences.
  • Medical School and Robert Aitken Building: Your main teaching hubs, equipped with modern teaching labs, seminar rooms, and clinical simulation spaces.
  • University libraries: Access to the Main Library and Barnes Library, with extensive pharmacy databases, journals, and e-resources.
  • Accredited training environment: All facilities meet General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) standards for professional readiness.

This immersive approach ensures you graduate not just with knowledge, but with the confidence and clinical skills to thrive in modern pharmacy practice.
