MPharm in Pharmacy

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Huddersfield

Program Overview

The MPharm Pharmacy at Huddersfield is a four-year full-time professional degree, fully accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). It blends strong scientific foundations (chemistry, pharmacology, physiology, pathology) with real pharmacy practice so you graduate ready for patient-facing roles or further specialisation.

Curriculum Structure

Here’s what you’ll study in different years, what modules you take, and how knowledge & skills build up:

Year 1
You begin with core modules such as Pharmacy Practice 1, Pharmaceutical Chemistry 1, Human Physiology and Pathology, Formulation and Compounding of Medicines, Scientific Basis of Drug Action. These modules lay the groundwork: how medicines are made, how they work in the body, basic disease mechanisms, and safe formulation techniques.

Year 2
You’ll deepen into more complex topics: modules explore pharmacology, drug formulation and pharmaceutics (solid dosage forms etc.), and increase emphasis on patient care, medicinal chemistry, dosing, absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion (ADME). Compulsory work-placements in healthcare settings begin to play a larger role.

Final Years (Years 3 & 4)
You move towards advanced practice, specialist modules in clinical pharmacy, pharmacy practice, therapeutics, and disease management. You’ll gain more placement experience in hospital/community/industry contexts; learning is heavily focused on preparing for the GPhC foundation year and your professional responsibilities. You'll also develop critical thinking, regulatory, ethical, and patient-centred care skills.

Focus Areas

Drug formulation & compounding; pharmacology & therapeutics; human physiology & pathology; clinical pharmacy practice; medicinal chemistry; regulatory, ethical & patient-centred care.

Learning Outcomes

You’ll be able to: apply scientific principles underlying pharmacy practice; assess, prescribe and manage medicines safely; understand patient-care in different settings; work effectively in inter-professional healthcare teams; meet standards for registration with GPhC.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

This programme is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) — required if you want to become a practising pharmacist in the UK. (

Reputation (Employability & Rankings)

  • 80% of graduates from this course were in work or further study 15 months after graduation (HESA Graduate Outcomes).

  • Huddersfield has TEF Gold rating in all three aspects as of 2023.  the same style.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

You don’t just study theory. Huddersfield’s MPharm gives you real-world exposure: you’ll do hands-on lab work, professional placements in different pharmacy settings, and interact with actual pharmacy practice. The new Pharmacy Suite (a dedicated facility) and purpose-built laboratories let you practise exactly what pharmacists do — dispensing, formulation, patient consultation, etc. You’ll also do workshops linking chemistry with pharmacy practice, which help you see how scientific concepts are used in daily pharmacy work.

Here’s what that means in practice:

  • Professional Work-Based Placements: Throughout the MPharm you are required to take placements in healthcare settings. You’ll work in community pharmacies, hospitals, and other clinical settings around Huddersfield and surrounding areas. This gives you exposure to patient interaction, dispensing, multidisciplinary team working, and real pharmaceutical service delivery.

  • State-of-the-Art Pharmacy Suite & Labs: The Pharmacy Suite is a dedicated facility for teaching pharmacy practice and pharmacy science; labs for formulation, compounding medicines, doing practical dispensing and consultation simulations.

  • Workshops that Link Science & Practice: For example, in Year 2 you might do workshops where you match chemical structure and drug properties to pharmacy practices—e.g. how molecules behave in the body or crossing the blood-brain barrier, dose calculations, etc. These aren’t optional add-ons—they are embedded in the curriculum.

  • Interdisciplinary & Research Centres: The Department of Pharmacy connects with research centres like the Centre for Biomarker Research and the Pharmaceutical Policy & Practice Research Centre. You’ll have access to research-led teaching, possibly participate in smaller research projects (e.g. lab experiments, data analysis) under supervision.

  • Professional Practice Training: Skills in patient consultation, ethics, regulation, working with real or simulated prescriptions, and practicing professionalism (dress code, conduct) are all part of placements

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from this MPharm leave with the qualification needed to register as a pharmacist in the UK, plus practical experience and professional skills that employers look for. You can expect roles like Community Pharmacist, Hospital Pharmacist, Clinical Pharmacist, or roles in pharmaceutical industry (R&D, regulation, quality assurance). Because the degree is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) and includes professional placements, you’re not just learning—you’re stepping into readiness.

Here’s what Huddersfield provides, and what you can expect after you finish:

  • The Careers & Employability Service helps with CV/interview coaching, finding graduate roles, and hosting job fairs. After you graduate, you still have access to this service.

  • Automatic involvement in the Global Professional Award (GPA) which complements your degree; it gives you extra recognition for real-world skills.

  • The Placement Unit ensures that required placements are integrated into your degree (hospital, community, clinical settings). These give you hands-on experience which employers expect.

  • Graduate Outcomes surveys show that many Huddersfield postgraduates and undergraduates are in work or further study within 15 months of finishing. For postgrads, 97% are in work or study within 15 months; this indicates that Huddersfield degrees lead to meaningful opportunities.

  • Because the course is GPhC-accredited, when you graduate you’ll be eligible to start the pre-registration training year required to fully qualify as a pharmacist. This accreditation gives your degree long-term professional value.

Further Academic Progression:
After completing the MPharm, you have options to deepen or widen your expertise:

  • Undertake postgraduate qualifications (MSc, Master’s) in specialisms such as Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Policy, Drug Development, Pharmacokinetics, etc.

  • Move into PhD or doctoral research if you are interested in an academic or R&D career.

  • Enrol in continuing professional development (CPD) courses, or certifications such as Independent Prescribing (once you are a registered pharmacist), regulatory affairs or pharmaceutical leadership.
