BSc Pharmacology

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Manchester

Program Overview

This degree explores how drugs interact with living organisms—how they work, how they’re broken down by the body, and how they can also cause harm. It mixes biology, chemistry, neuroscience and physiology to give you deep understanding of both existing medicines and the process of creating new ones. The course is flexible: you can add options like study abroad or integrated master’s elements.

Curriculum structure

Year 1

You’ll start with broad foundational modules: Biochemistry (BIOL10212), Molecular Biology (BIOL10221), From Molecules to Cells (BIOL10232), plus neuroscience and physiology basics. Expect hands-on lab work, data handling, genetics, and essential biological sciences.

Year 2

This is where things deepen. You take modules like Pharmacology RSM (BIOL20932), Clinical Drug Development (BIOL21302), Drugs & the Brain (BIOL21312), and Membrane Excitability: Ion Channels & Transporters in Action (BIOL21321). You also write an extended essay on a relevant pharmacology topic and develop research skills

You’ll explore contemporary and advanced topics—Toxins, Toxicants & Toxicity (BIOL31602), Membrane Transport and Signalling in Health & Disease (BIOL31621), plus an independent research project (lab-based or in analysis/bioinformatics). Optional units let you tailor the degree (e.g. disease, signalling, physiology, enterprise).

Focus areas

Pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, toxicology, neuroscience, molecular biology, drug development, research methods.

Learning outcomes

You’ll graduate able to design and conduct experiments; interpret how drugs affect systems from molecules to whole organisms; understand safety and efficacy of drug use; communicate scientifically; and apply knowledge to both industry and research settings.

Professional alignment (accreditation)

The course holds Advanced Accreditation from the Royal Society of Biology, which shows it meets high standards in bioscience education and research practice. Graduates get benefits like faster eligibility for MRSB membership (after two years of work instead of three).

Reputation (employability rankings)

Manchester is ranked among the UK’s top institutions for Pharmacology & Pharmacy. Awards & data show strong research output and excellent industry connections. Graduate outcomes suggest many students end up in research or industry roles with competitive salaries.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

From day one, this program ensures you’re working with modern tools, lab equipment, and research projects—not just listening to lectures. You’ll use fully equipped biology/biomedical labs to run techniques such as PCR, DNA sequencing, electrophoresis, spectrophotometry, histology, immunofluorescence microscopy, ECG/EEG, and more. Computing clusters, e-learning platforms, and discussion boards support digital learning. In later years, you’ll move into independent research, group work, and placements (if you choose the version with industrial experience).

Here’s what that looks like in action:

  • Final-year students carry out research projects in high-end bioscience labs with cutting-edge equipment, under supervision from Manchester’s top researchers

  • The university provides modern teaching labs for core techniques: PCR, DNA sequencing, gel electrophoresis, dissection & histology, immunofluorescence microscopy, ECG/EEG, spectrophotometry—and you’ll apply those in coursework and practical assessments

  • Access to computing facilities and digital tools, over 200 PCs in dedicated clusters, plus online lecture notes, podcasts, quizzes, and discussion boards to support your learning outside the lab

  • For those doing “Pharmacology with Industrial/Professional Experience”, there’s a year-long placement in UK or international partner organisations in Year 3—roles range from biotech industry to science communication or research projects

  • The Student Experience Internships (SEI) scheme lets penultimate years get paid, supervised internships within the University or with charities/non-profits—designed to build work experience and project skills

  • Technology platforms in Biology, Medicine & Health give you access to facilities for molecular analysis, flow cytometry, bioimaging, genome editing, clinical/pre-clinical imaging, histology, and more—so you get exposure to the methods used in cutting-edge bioscience research
