Strathclyde’s BSc (Hons) Biochemistry & Pharmacology is a dynamic joint degree that explores the molecular basis of life and how drugs interact with biological systems. It’s ideal for students who enjoy both biology and chemistry and want to understand disease mechanisms and therapeutic development from a scientific and clinical perspective.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
You’ll build a strong foundation in life sciences through modules like Cells & their Molecules, Organisms & Disease, and Bio-organic Chemistry. These are supported by Being a Biomolecular Scientist 1, which develops your lab skills, scientific writing, and data analysis — all essential for future research and clinical application.
Year 2
This year introduces you to the four core disciplines: Biochemistry, Immunology, Microbiology, and Pharmacology. You’ll also take Being a Biomolecular Scientist 2, where you’ll deepen your lab techniques and analytical skills while exploring how these disciplines interconnect in health and disease.
Year 3
You’ll specialise in Biochemistry and Pharmacology, studying modules such as Advanced Biochemistry and Pharmacology. These cover drug-receptor interactions, metabolic pathways, and molecular mechanisms of disease. You’ll also complete Being a Biomolecular Scientist 3, which focuses on experimental design, data interpretation, and scientific communication.
Year 4
In your final year, you’ll undertake a substantial Research Project in either biochemistry or pharmacology, working alongside academic researchers. You’ll also study advanced topics like Neuropharmacology and Molecular Biology of Cancer, applying your knowledge to real-world biomedical challenges.
Focus areas
Molecular biology, drug-receptor interactions, metabolism, neuropharmacology, disease mechanisms, biomedical research
Learning outcomes
Experimental design, pharmacological analysis, biochemical techniques, data interpretation, research communication, critical evaluation
Professional alignment (accreditation)
Delivered by the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences; aligned with NHS and pharmaceutical industry research standards
Reputation (employability rankings)
Ranked 1st in the UK for Pharmacology & Pharmacy (Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025); UK University of the Year (Daily Mail University Awards 2026)
Strathclyde’s BSc (Hons) Biochemistry & Pharmacology gives you hands-on experience in molecular science and drug research — with practical lab work embedded across all four years. You’ll train in advanced techniques using specialist equipment inside the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences, gaining the skills needed for careers in biomedical research, pharmaceuticals, or clinical development.
Here’s how experiential learning is built into the program:
This is a degree that prepares you for the lab bench, the research institute, and the future of drug science.
Graduates of Strathclyde’s BSc (Hons) Biochemistry & Pharmacology are well-prepared for careers in biomedical research, pharmaceutical development, clinical trials, and regulatory science. Many go on to work as research scientists, pharmacologists, toxicologists, or clinical data analysts — applying their skills in industry, healthcare, or academia.
