BSc Hons Pharmacology (with Foundation Year)

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Central Lancashire

Program Overview

Lancashire’s BSc (Hons) Pharmacology with Foundation Entry is designed for students who are passionate about drug science but may not yet meet the standard entry requirements. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a supportive start to university-level science, with a strong focus on building your academic and laboratory skills before progressing into the full pharmacology degree.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: You’ll begin with essential science and study skills through modules like Introduction to Biosciences, Scientific Communication and Study Skills, and Introduction to Chemistry and Biochemistry. This year is all about building your confidence in lab techniques, data analysis, and the core principles of biology and chemistry.

Year 2
Now fully integrated into the BSc Pharmacology degree, you’ll explore Fundamentals of Biosciences, Essential Skills in Biosciences, and Biosciences in Practice. These modules introduce you to molecular biology, pharmacological principles, and the professional landscape of biosciences, with a strong emphasis on lab-based learning.

Year 3
You’ll deepen your understanding of drug action and human physiology through modules like Physiology and Pharmacology, Bioscience Practical Skills, and Molecules to Cells. This year focuses on experimental design, pharmacokinetics, and how drugs interact with biological systems.

Year 4
Your final year is all about applying your knowledge in real-world contexts. You’ll undertake a major Research Project and study advanced modules such as Drug Development, Advanced Therapies, and Neuropharmacology. These explore cutting-edge topics like nanomedicine, cancer pharmacology, and nervous system therapeutics.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students in Lancashire’s BSc (Hons) Pharmacology with Foundation Entry develop practical skills from the ground up — starting with core lab techniques and progressing to advanced drug analysis and research. You’ll learn in purpose-built science facilities, using industry-standard equipment and digital tools that mirror real-world pharmacology environments.

Here’s how experiential learning is built into the program:

  • Foundation modules like Introduction to Biosciences and Scientific Communication include hands-on lab sessions and group-based scientific projects.
  • Access to the £14-million JB Firth Building, which houses modern teaching labs and research spaces for pharmacology and biomedical sciences.
  • Use of pharmaceutics laboratories and analytical equipment, including tools for drug formulation, pharmacokinetics, and cellular analysis.
  • Independent Research Project in Year 3, where students design and conduct experiments under academic supervision.
  • Digital learning tools and online resources, including access to UCLan’s virtual learning environment and scientific databases.
  • Complimentary student membership with the British Pharmacological Society, offering access to journals, events, and career development resources.
  • Support from the School of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, whose staff are active members of the British Neuroscience Association and British Neuro-Oncology Society.

This is a degree that builds your confidence in the lab and prepares you for the demands of modern pharmacological science.
