MSci Physiotherapy

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Birmingham

Program Overview

The MSci Physiotherapy at the University of Birmingham is a dynamic four-year program that blends science, clinical skill, and compassionate care. It’s designed for students who want to make a real difference in people’s lives by helping them recover from injury, illness, or disability through evidence-based practice and hands-on rehabilitation techniques.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll begin by building a strong foundation in anatomy, physiology, and movement science. Core modules such as Musculoskeletal Studies, Cardiorespiratory Studies, and Neurological Studies introduce you to how the body functions and responds to therapy. Alongside academic study, you’ll start developing practical skills in simulated environments, preparing you for early patient interaction.

Year 2
This year deepens your understanding of physiotherapy through modules like Applied Movement Science, Rehabilitation, and Health and Wellbeing. You’ll start applying theory to real cases and undertake your first clinical placements in healthcare settings. The focus shifts toward critical thinking, assessment, and treatment planning — helping you grow confidence in working with patients across diverse backgrounds.

Year 3
You’ll refine your clinical reasoning and leadership skills through more advanced modules such as Complex Case Management and Clinical Practice. This stage includes longer placements that immerse you in hospital, community, and private practice environments. You’ll also explore the research side of physiotherapy, learning to evaluate evidence and apply it to real-world rehabilitation strategies.

Year 4
In your final year, you’ll bring everything together — integrating clinical expertise, research, and professional practice. A major feature is the MSci Research Project, where you conduct an independent study on a physiotherapy topic of your choice. You’ll also engage in advanced clinical placements, preparing you for seamless transition into professional registration and employment.
