Curriculum Structure

Year One
Your first year focuses on building the foundations of caring for children and young people. Modules like Foundations of CYP Nursing Knowledge, Foundations of Scientific Principles for Child Nursing, and Foundations of Expansive Learning for Professional Nursing Practice teach you the basics of child health, development, and family-centered care. Your Practice Learning 1 placement gives you early hands-on experience, helping you practice essential nursing skills and interact with children and families under supervision.

Year Two
In the second year, you’ll develop deeper clinical skills and a stronger understanding of complex child health needs. Modules such as Developing Nursing Knowledge in CYP Nursing and Developing Scientific Principles for CYP Nursing guide you in assessing, planning, and delivering care tailored to children. Practice Learning 2 placements allow you to apply your learning in hospital wards, clinics, or community settings, handling more complex cases and gaining confidence in your abilities.

Year Three (Final Year)
Your final year prepares you to graduate as a fully qualified children’s nurse. Through Consolidating Nursing Knowledge in CYP Nursing, Consolidating Scientific Principles for CYP Nursing, and Practice Learning 3 CYP Nursing, you’ll refine your skills in advanced care planning, managing complex cases, and working within multidisciplinary teams. By the end, you’ll be ready to step into a professional role, capable of supporting children and families through illness, recovery, or long-term care.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Middlesex, learning to become a children’s nurse isn’t just about sitting in lectures — you’ll spend a huge part of your time doing. From realistic simulation labs to hands-on placements in London hospitals, you’ll gain the skills, confidence, and professional experience needed to care for children and young people in real-world settings.

Here’s how your practical learning comes to life:

  • Simulation suites at the West Stand (StoneX Stadium) – practise emergency procedures, ward care, and neonatal/paediatric scenarios with life-like mannequins before entering real clinical settings.

  • Mock wards and consultation rooms – train in environments that replicate hospitals and community care, helping you gain confidence in patient interaction and clinical skills.

  • Clinical placements across London hospitals and healthcare settings – gain hands-on experience working with children, young people, and families under supervision, from children’s wards to community and neonatal care.

  • Balanced learning: 50% practice, 50% theory – you’ll spend half your time in placements and practical sessions, and half in academic learning, making sure you’re fully prepared for professional practice.

  • Guided mentoring and support – experienced clinical staff, academic tutors, and personal mentors support you throughout placements to help you build confidence, judgement, and teamwork skills.
