The BSc Biotechnology with Entrepreneurship program at the University of Manchester is designed to equip students with a solid foundation in biological sciences while developing essential business and entrepreneurial skills. The course combines two-thirds biological sciences learning with one-third entrepreneurship education, preparing graduates for careers that bridge science and business. A key feature of the program is a year-long placement, allowing students to gain practical experience in the biotechnology industry.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
Students begin with a broad introduction to biological sciences, covering key concepts such as biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, pharmacology, and molecular biology. In addition, they study fundamental concepts of entrepreneurial skills and business management, delivered by the Alliance Manchester Business School. This includes core knowledge of enterprise, markets, and finance, culminating in the creation of a business proposal.
Year 2
The second year deepens students' understanding of biological sciences and entrepreneurship. They engage in more specialized topics within biotechnology and continue to develop their business acumen through advanced entrepreneurship units.
Year 3
Subject to satisfactory academic performance and placement availability, you will spend this year on your entrepreneurship placement. This may be in the UK or abroad, and students may also arrange their own placements. You will complete a scientific report and undergo an oral examination on your research that contributes 10% to your overall degree mark. You will be marked out of 110% for your whole degree.
Year 4
The final year involves advanced coursework in biotechnology, including topics like bioprocessing, regulatory affairs, and entrepreneurship. Students also undertake a research project, allowing them to explore a specific area of interest in depth.
Focus Areas
The program covers a broad range of topics within biotechnology, including molecular biology, genetic engineering, bioinformatics, industrial biotechnology, and bioprocessing. It also emphasizes the development of professional skills, such as project management, communication, and teamwork, through the industrial placement and research project.
Learning Outcomes
Graduates of the program will have a comprehensive understanding of biotechnology and its applications. They will possess strong laboratory and research skills, as well as practical experience gained through the industrial placement. Additionally, they will have developed professional competencies that are highly valued by employers in the biotechnology sector.
Professional Alignment (Accreditation)
The program is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, granting graduates eligibility for Member (MRSB) status after just two years of practice. This accreditation underscores the program's alignment with professional standards and its commitment to producing highly qualified graduates.
