Mathematics with a Professional Placement Year (MMath)

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Cardiff University

Program Overview

The MMath Mathematics with a Professional Placement Year is a five‑year integrated master’s degree that combines advanced mathematics study with a full year of paid industry experience. It’s ideal for students aiming for careers in data science, finance, research, or technology who want both deep theoretical training and practical work experience before graduation.

Curriculum Structure

Year One
You begin with foundational mathematics modules such as Elementary Differential Equations (MA1001), Computing for Mathematics (MA1003), Foundations of Mathematics I & II (MA1005, MA1006), Linear Algebra I (MA1008), Geometry (MA1004), and Introduction to Probability Theory (MA1500). Optional modules like Statistical Inference (MA1501) or Classical Mechanics (MA1301) introduce applied contexts for mathematics.

Year Two
This year develops your understanding of advanced calculus, linear algebra, probability and statistics, and computational mathematics. Optional modules let you explore applied areas such as operational research, finance, or data modelling.

Year Three — Professional Placement Year
You spend this year in a professional environment, gaining hands-on experience in applying mathematics in industry, technology, finance, engineering, or research. You develop workplace skills such as project management, communication, and teamwork, alongside practical application of mathematical and computational techniques.

Year Four
Returning to Cardiff, you focus on advanced core and optional modules, such as Functional and Fourier Analysis (MA3005), Partial Differential Equations (MA3016), Optimisation (MA3603), Mathematics of Artificial Intelligence (MA3701), or Spectral Theory (MA4010). You also begin your independent research project, allowing you to specialise in an area aligned with your career or academic goals.

Year Five
In the final year, you complete your major research project or extended dissertation, consolidating your knowledge and demonstrating your ability to conduct independent, advanced mathematical research. You also continue with final-year optional modules, refining your expertise in specialised areas such as applied mathematics, pure theory, statistics, or computational mathematics.

Focus areas:
Advanced pure mathematics (analysis, algebra, topology), applied mathematics (PDEs, optimisation, modelling), probability & statistics, computational mathematics, and professional industry experience.

Learning outcomes:
Graduates develop high-level mathematical reasoning, advanced problem-solving skills, computational competence, and experience applying mathematical tools in professional contexts. They are also trained to conduct independent research, preparing them for academic or industrial careers.

Professional alignment (accreditation):
Accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), providing professional recognition for careers in mathematics, finance, technology, and research.

Reputation (employability & global standing):
Graduates of the MMath with Professional Placement are highly attractive to employers in finance, technology, data science, engineering, and research, and are also well-prepared for PhD study or academic roles. The combination of advanced mathematics and professional experience gives them a competitive edge.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

MMath Mathematics with a Professional Placement Year is a 5-year full-time degree (sandwich course). Year 3 is a paid placement in industry, where you work as a mathematician, statistician, or in a related role to gain real-world experience before returning for two more years of advanced study. This programme provides deeper mathematical knowledge than a standard BSc while integrating practical skills and professional exposure.

Experiential Learning — Curriculum, Tools & Placement

  • Modern learning environment: Teaching takes place in Cardiff’s purpose-built mathematics facility, designed for flexible workspaces, specialist teaching labs, and computing facilities.

  • Year 1 and 2 (foundation + advanced modules): Build strong foundations in calculus, algebra, analysis, computing, probability, and statistics. Optional modules may include mechanics or finance.

  • Placement year (Year 3): Full-time work in a professional environment, applying mathematics and statistics to real-world problems. Develop workplace skills such as communication, teamwork, professionalism, and using software to solve practical problems.

  • Year 4 and 5 (advanced and research-level study): High-level mathematics modules, including topics such as mathematical analysis, mathematical physics, fluid dynamics, or other specialised areas depending on your interests.

  • Major project in final year: A substantial individual project, such as advanced theory research, software development, or applied mathematical investigation.

  • Support and resources: Personal tutor guidance, extensive library and digital resources, computing support, and career planning assistance.

Skills, Experience & Career Readiness

Graduates of this MMath programme will have:

  • Advanced mathematical knowledge and technical skills in analysis, modelling, abstract mathematics, and applied maths.

  • Practical, real-world work experience from the placement year, giving an edge in job applications and insight into professional use of mathematics.

  • Research experience through the final-year project, preparing for postgraduate study or research-focused careers.

  • Transferable professional skills: problem solving, critical thinking, logical reasoning, communication, project management, and independent working.

  • Flexibility to change pathways in the first two years if interests evolve.

Who This Programme Is Best For
