BSc (hons) economics & mathematics

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Bath

Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Economics & Mathematics at Bath blends economic theory with strong mathematical and statistical training, helping you understand how economies function through both logical reasoning and quantitative analysis. It’s ideal for students who enjoy mathematics, statistics, data interpretation, and economics — preparing you to analyse real-world economic problems with precision and depth.

Curriculum Structure

First Year

Year 1 builds your core foundation in both subjects. You study Core Pure and Statistical Mathematics A & B, covering algebra, analysis, linear algebra, probability, and statistics. Alongside this, you take Microeconomics 1 and Macroeconomics 1, which introduce market behaviour, economic decision-making, and key macroeconomic concepts, giving you a balanced start across both disciplines.

Second Year

In Year 2, your learning becomes more quantitative and applied. You continue with mathematics and statistics through modules such as Statistics 2A / 2B and optional units in probability theory, numerical methods, or modelling. At the same time, you progress to intermediate economics and econometrics, learning how to apply statistical and mathematical techniques to real economic data and theories.

Third Year (Final Year)

In the final year, you choose from a wide selection of mathematics, statistics, and economics modules, allowing you to tailor the course to your strengths and goals. Options can include areas such as advanced econometrics, economic theory, finance, optimisation, probabilistic modelling, data analysis, or applied mathematics. This flexibility helps you build a focused profile for careers in economics, finance, data or research.

Focus Areas

Mathematics, statistics, probability, quantitative modelling, econometrics, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and data-driven economic analysis.

Learning Outcomes

You will graduate with strong mathematical reasoning, statistical analysis skills, and a deep understanding of economic systems. You’ll be able to build quantitative economic models, analyse data, interpret economic trends, and communicate complex economic and mathematical ideas clearly.

Professional Alignment & Career Readiness

This degree prepares you for a wide range of careers: financial analysis, economic research, consulting, data science, analytics, banking, actuarial work, public policy economics, and econometrics. The combination of rigorous mathematics and economics also makes you competitive for postgraduate studies in economics, finance, data science, quantitative research, or statistics.

Why This Course Stands Out at Bath

You benefit from studying across two strong departments, gaining high-quality training in both mathematics and economics.
