University of Bath History
The University of Bath can be traced back to the Merchant Ventures’ Technical College, which was formed as a school in 1595 and whose graduates include scientists Paul Dirac and Peter Higgs. In 1949, the Bristol Education Authority took administration of the college; it was renamed the Bristol College of Technology, then the Bristol College of Science and Technology in 1960, when it became one of ten technical colleges under the Ministry of Education's umbrella. The Robbins Committee report in 1963 cleared the path for the college to become Bath University of Technology, along with a number of other schools.
