Curriculum Structure

Year 1 (Stage 1)

Your first year builds the core foundations of financial literacy and business understanding. You study Financial Accounting, learning how to prepare and interpret financial statements for different types of organisations. Quantitative Skills for Accounting and Finance develops your confidence with statistics, probability, and Excel-based problem solving. You also explore economic decision-making through Business Economics, and gain insights into internal decision-support systems in Management Accounting. Professional awareness is strengthened through Professional Ethics in Accounting and Finance, introducing ethical dilemmas, ESG concepts, and industry standards. The year is rounded out by Principles of Finance, which introduces investment decisions, capital markets, and financial planning.

Year 2 (Stage 2)

Your second year takes you deeper into the analytical and regulatory side of accounting. In International Financial Reporting, you develop fluency in IFRS and how global companies report performance. Management Accounting II strengthens your ability to evaluate costs, measure performance, and support strategic decision-making. You also study Personal Taxation, covering tax rules, liabilities, and planning for individuals. Strategic thinking is elevated in Strategic Management, where you analyse real business scenarios and long-term corporate decisions. Additionally, the Employability for Stage 2 module helps you build your CV, develop interview skills, and prepare to secure your placement year.

Year 3 (Year in Industry)

Your third year is spent working full-time in a professional organisation as part of the Year in Industry requirement. You gain invaluable experience in roles such as accounting support, financial analysis, auditing, budgeting, or corporate finance. During this year, you complete a Year in Industry Report that reflects on your responsibilities, skills gained, and the professional environment. The placement year provides intensive real-world learning and greatly enhances your employability.

Year 4 (Stage 3)

In your final year, you return to campus to refine your expertise through advanced modules. Core areas include Advanced Financial Accounting, where you work with group accounts, consolidation techniques, and complex reporting issues. Business Finance builds your understanding of valuation, capital structure, and corporate financial management. Auditing introduces the regulatory environment, audit planning, risk assessment, and professional responsibilities. You can also choose from specialised options such as Taxation, Fixed Income Markets, Futures and Options, and Finance with Excel, allowing you to tailor the degree toward careers in accountancy, corporate finance, or financial markets.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

On this programme, you get more than lectures — you build real-world experience. Through a dedicated year in industry, you’ll apply your classroom knowledge in a live business, using professional tools and techniques. Kent's Careers and Employability Service supports you throughout: you start preparing from Stage 1, attend workshops, build applications, and continue to be supported during your placement. This structured support ensures you’re not just ready for a placement — you thrive in it.

During your placement year, you’re not just observing — you work in functional areas aligned with your course, applying financial modelling, accounting standards, and business analytics in real settings. During this time, you complete a Year in Industry Report, reflecting on your role, contributions, challenges, and outcomes.

Here’s a more detailed look at how practical and professional your learning can get:

  • Work Placements: You spend a full year working in industry (minimum 44 weeks), with many roles paid, depending on the employer.

  • Placement Support: The Careers and Employability team provides ongoing support — from CV writing and interview prep to matching with placement opportunities.

  • Self‑Employed Option: There’s a “Selfie” placement-year programme where you can start building your own business under mentoring from an in-house entrepreneur at Kent Business School.

  • Professional Tools & Software: During your degree (both before and after the placement), you engage with real business data and financial tools, including data analytics and predictive modelling in modules like Data Intelligence & Predictive Analytics.

  • Live Business Projects: In later years, you may take modules like KBS Challenge, where you work in teams on real business problems submitted by companies — giving you direct experience of consultancy-style work.

  • Auditing & Assurance Practice: Through an Auditing module, you engage in case studies that mirror real auditor-client interactions, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance.

  • Accounting & Finance Research: You can also take a Research Project in Accounting & Finance, where under academic supervision (or in collaboration with business), you investigate contemporary accounting or finance issues and present your findings.

Progression & Future Opportunities

When you graduate from this programme, you’ll be very well placed for roles such as a chartered accountant, financial analyst, auditor, or management accountant, thanks to the blend of academic rigour and your year in industry. Because of your placement experience, you’ll often be more attractive to employers than graduates without work exposure — and you’ll likely command a higher starting salary.
