Program Overview

The BASS Philosophy and Politics degree at Manchester is perfect if you’re curious about the big questions in life and how they connect to power, society, and decision-making. It suits students who want a flexible course, one that lets you explore different areas of social sciences before specialising, while developing strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll start broad, studying at least three social science subjects alongside your core Philosophy and Politics units. This gives you a strong foundation and the freedom to shape your interests. Typical units include Introduction to Political Theory, Introduction to Ethics, and British Politics: Power and the State.

Year 2
In the second year, you’ll narrow your focus and go deeper into Philosophy and Politics while still having the option to add another social science subject. You could take courses like Existentialism, The Politics of Globalisation, and Ethics, Justice and Society. These help you build both specialist knowledge and transferable skills like debating complex ideas and evaluating arguments.

Year 3
Your final year is where you bring everything together. You’ll focus on advanced topics and can design your own research through a Dissertation or an independent project. Options like Philosophy of Mind and Democracy and Legitimacy let you tackle challenging, real-world issues with the intellectual confidence you’ve developed throughout your degree.

  • Explore study abroad or placement options if you choose the four-year pathway, giving you the chance to experience a new culture or gain professional experience before you graduate.

  • Make the most of world-class facilities like the University’s extensive library network, the John Rylands Research Institute and Library, and cultural spaces such as the Whitworth, all of which are at your fingertips to enrich your studies.
