Program Overview

The 4-year Scots Law LLB (Hons) at the University of Dundee is designed to give you a deep grounding in Scotland’s legal system, preparing you for a career as a solicitor, advocate, or policy expert. You’ll study a strong mix of public, private and criminal law while developing your legal reasoning, research and practical skills through seminars, moots and independent projects.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
In your first year, you’ll get to grips with the foundations of law: modules such as Foundations of Law, Scots Criminal Law & Evidence, and Public Law help you understand the basics of Scottish legal systems, how crime and power are regulated, and how legal sources operate. Through lectures and small-group tutorials, you’ll also build your research skills by learning to read, interpret and analyse legislation and cases.

Year 2
In the second year, you’ll deepen your understanding of private law and commercial contexts with modules like Private Law of Scotland II, Scottish Property Law, and Business Organisations. At the same time, you’ll explore how law shapes society and public institutions, while continuing to grow your ability to argue, draft legal analysis, and think through complex legal problems.

Year 3
Your penultimate year gives you even more freedom and specialization. Core modules will include EU Law, Commercial Law, and Evidence, while elective options might let you explore things like Human Rights Law or Tribunal Skills. During this year, you’ll also be encouraged to build advocacy and oral reasoning abilities through moots and presentations, which deepen the practical side of your legal education.

Year 4
In your final year, you’ll complete a substantial piece of independent research via a Law Dissertation, where you choose a topic that matters to you and work closely with a supervisor. Alongside this, you’ll take advanced and elective modules to deepen your expertise — potentially in areas like energy law, technology law, or private international law — helping you to graduate as a confident, specialist legal thinker ready for practice or further study.
