Law LLB (Hons)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Sussex

Program Overview

The LLB (Hons) in Law at the University of Sussex is a three-year, on-campus degree that equips you with a deep understanding of legal systems, critical thinking, and practical lawyering skills. It’s ideal for ambitious students who want to pursue careers in legal practice, public policy, or academia, or simply want a robust grounding in how law shapes society.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: You’ll dive into foundational areas like Public Law & the Legal System, Contract Law, and Tort Law. Through these core modules, you’ll begin to understand how laws are made, how legal disputes arise, and the key principles that underpin legal reasoning.

Year 2: Building on that base, you’ll explore Criminal Law, EU Law, and Jurisprudence & Political Theory. This year sharpens your analytical skills as you tackle issues of crime, punishment, and the philosophical underpinnings of justice.

Year 3: In your final year, you get to tailor your pathway with options like Commercial Law, Human Rights Law, or Intellectual Property Law, complemented by a Dissertation. This offers a chance to specialize in a field you’re passionate about and conduct in-depth legal research.

Focus Areas:
Public law, contract and tort law, criminal justice, European and international law, legal theory, human rights, commercial law

Learning Outcomes:
You’ll learn to think like a lawyer — analysing legal problems, interpreting statutes and cases, making persuasive arguments, and applying legal theory to real-world scenarios. You’ll also gain strong written and oral communication skills, research capacity, and ethical awareness.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation):
The degree aligns with the academic stage of professional legal training. While it provides a firm foundation for careers in law or further legal training, students should check the current rules for professional qualifications (like becoming a solicitor or barrister) in the UK.

Reputation (Employability):
Sussex Law graduates are highly regarded — the University of Sussex consistently ranks among UK universities with strong employment outcomes for law students thanks to its practical curriculum and supportive careers service.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Sussex, the LLB is designed to help you learn the law by doing it. From your first year, you’ll work with real case materials, practise legal reasoning, and develop practical skills in spaces that mirror professional environments. You’ll have access to a purpose-built Mooting Suite, dedicated law libraries, and specialist support through clinics, workshops, and career programmes that bring real legal work into your degree. The Law School also partners with community organisations, giving you opportunities to apply your skills beyond the classroom and understand how law impacts people’s everyday lives.

Here’s how that hands-on experience comes to life in your studies:

  • Sussex Mooting Programme: Take part in mooting competitions where you argue cases in a real courtroom-style setting to build advocacy, research, and presentation skills.

  • Sussex Legal Clinic: Work with qualified lawyers and support real clients on issues such as housing, welfare, discrimination, and family matters.

  • Client Interviewing & Negotiation Training: Develop practical lawyering skills through structured workshops and simulated client scenarios.

  • Law Study Spaces & Resources: Access the on-campus Law, Politics and Sociology Department study zones, the Library’s extensive case law databases, and quiet research spaces designed for legal students.

  • Digital Legal Research Tools: Learn to use professional legal databases such as Westlaw and LexisNexis as part of your coursework.

  • Sussex Careers & Placements Support: Get help finding internships or work experience with law firms, NGOs, public sector bodies, or policy organisations.
