LLB Law with Criminology

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Leicester

Program Overview

The LLB Law with Criminology at Leicester combines a solid grounding in legal studies with a deep dive into what drives crime, how society responds to it, and how criminal justice works — perfect if you’re interested in both the letter of the law and the bigger picture of crime and punishment. Whether you see yourself working in criminal law, public policy, or social reform, this course gives you the tools to think like a lawyer and a criminologist.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
In your first year, you will build a strong foundation in law while getting introduced to the world of criminology. You’ll study Constitutional and Administrative Law, Contract Law, and Foundations of Law, which give you a clear understanding of how legal systems operate. Alongside this, the Introduction to Criminology module helps you explore key ideas about the nature of crime, its social roots, and how societies define and control criminal behaviour.

Year 2
During the second year, the focus shifts to core legal subjects like Criminal Law, the Law of Tort, and EU Law (or its UK-equivalent), helping you understand liability, duty, and cross-jurisdictional issues. From the criminology side, you’ll take Punishment and Rehabilitation, which examines different theories of punishment, penal systems, and how society tries to reform offenders. You’ll also choose optional modules — for example, Terrorism, Sex and Violence, Criminology Goes to the Movies, or Criminal Investigations, giving you the freedom to explore a criminology topic that really interests you.

Final Year
In your final year, you can really tailor your studies. Core modules like Equity & Trusts (Advanced) and Land Law (Advanced) ensure you cover foundational legal principles in depth. Beyond that, you’ll pick from a wide variety of options — such as International Law, Family Law, Human Rights, or Jurisprudence on the law side, and Forensic Science & Criminal Justice, Gender & Crime, Media, Crime & Control, or Criminal Justice & Mental Disorder on the criminology side. This flexibility means you finish with a degree that reflects your interests and strengths.

Focus Areas : Law, criminal behaviour, penal systems, social justice, crime prevention, lawmaking, rehabilitation

Learning Outcomes : You’ll learn to think critically about legal institutions and social policies; understand the causes and control of crime; conduct academic and legal research; develop legal reasoning and advocacy skills; and apply criminological theory to real-world justice issues.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation) : Leicester’s LLB is a qualifying law degree, meaning it meets the requirements for legal professional training in England and Wales.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Leicester, the LLB Law with Criminology feels very hands-on from the start. You’re not just reading cases — you’re learning how to apply the law in real situations. Whether you’re giving advice to actual clients, preparing arguments in a courtroom setting, or discussing real crime issues in small groups, the course is designed to make you feel like you’re already part of the legal world.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical experience throughout your degree:

  • You’ll work with real clients at the University’s Legal Advice Clinic, helping with everyday legal issues under the guidance of qualified solicitors.

  • You’ll use a fully equipped moot court, where you can practise courtroom arguments, develop your confidence, and even review your performances.

  • Tutorials are kept small so you can work through realistic legal problems, draft letters, and learn how lawyers communicate with clients.

  • You’ll have access to dedicated law study spaces, including the historic law library and modern collaborative areas for group projects.

  • The Pro Bono Society offers plenty of opportunities to get involved in community-focused legal work and build experience outside the classroom.

  • Criminology teaching blends lectures, workshops, and online discussion spaces, giving you an interactive way to explore real-world crime, justice, and policing issues.
