Study Abroad, LLB Hons

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Greenwich

Program Overview

The Study Abroad LLB (Hons) gives you a unique opportunity to combine a UK law degree with international experience, perfect for students eager to broaden their legal knowledge in a global context. Over four years, you’ll study core UK law alongside an overseas study period, developing practical legal skills, cultural insight, and a broader perspective that sets you apart in an increasingly international legal job market.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
Your first year builds the foundations of UK law. You’ll study modules such as English Legal System & Legal Skills, Public Law, Contract Law, and Criminal Law. These modules provide a solid understanding of legal principles, develop analytical and research skills, and introduce you to professional ethics in a legal context.

Year 2
In the second year, you progress to more substantive law areas like Land Law, Law of Torts, and Criminal Law in Practice. You’ll also begin preparing for the international element of the program, developing skills to apply UK legal principles in an overseas or comparative context, bridging academic theory with practical experience.

Year 3 – Study Abroad Year
This year is spent at a partner institution abroad. You’ll immerse yourself in a different legal system, studying modules aligned with your host university while gaining invaluable cultural, linguistic, and professional insights. This experience allows you to compare international legal frameworks, enhancing your global legal perspective and employability.

Year 4 – Final Year
Back in Greenwich, you’ll consolidate your learning and specialise in advanced topics such as Advocacy & Mooting, Professional Ethics & Conduct, and a Legal Research Project. This final year prepares you for professional practice or further study, combining the skills gained in both UK and international legal contexts.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

⚖️ Legal Advice Centre

Students can volunteer at the university's Legal Advice Centre, providing free one-off advice on employment, family, and housing law issues via video conferencing. Under the supervision of qualified lawyers, students gain hands-on experience in client interviews, legal research, drafting, and professional conduct. This experience not only enhances practical lawyering skills but also counts towards Qualifying Work Experience (QWE) for aspiring solicitors.

🏛️ External Legal Placements

Through the Legal Placement module, typically undertaken in the third year, students engage in placements with external organizations such as law firms, local authority legal departments, and community law centers. These placements provide real-world legal experience, allowing students to apply their knowledge in professional settings and develop essential skills sought by employers.

🕊️ Innocence Project London

The university hosts the Innocence Project London, a law clinic and registered charity where students work on cases involving potential miscarriages of justice. This initiative offers a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful legal work, developing investigative and analytical skills while contributing to the broader legal community.

🎤 Mooting and Mock Trials

Students can participate in mooting competitions and mock trials, honing their public speaking, legal research, and advocacy skills. These activities simulate real court proceedings, providing a platform to practice legal arguments and receive feedback, thereby enhancing courtroom readiness.

🌍 Study Abroad Opportunities

The Study Abroad LLB Hons programme includes a year studying in Europe at one of the university's partner institutions. This experience broadens students' legal perspectives, exposes them to different legal systems, and develops transferable skills such as adaptability and cross-cultural communication.

🤝 Employability Events and Mentoring

The university's Employability and Careers Team supports students in securing internships and placements. For instance, a first-year student, Rizwan, secured an internship at a city law firm with the team's guidance, gaining practical skills through mock negotiations, project tasks, and networking opportunities.
