LLB (Hons) Law (with Foundation Year)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of the West of England

Program Overview

The Law (LLB Hons) with Foundation Year at UWE is ideal if you want a gentler, more supported start to your legal studies while still working towards a full qualifying law degree. It’s a great fit for students who want extra academic preparation before stepping into the main LLB, giving you confidence, structure, and a strong foundation for future legal training.

Curriculum Structure

Foundation Year (Year 0)
Your foundation year is all about giving you the essential skills and knowledge you’ll rely on throughout your degree. You’ll explore subjects like Foundational Concepts in Business and Law and Foundations in Professional and Personal Development, which help you strengthen your study skills, understand core legal ideas, and get fully ready for the transition into university-level law.

Year 1
Your first official year of the LLB introduces you to the core pillars of English law. You’ll study Contract Law, Criminal Law, Law of Torts, and Public Law, gaining a clear understanding of how the legal system shapes everyday life — from agreements and rights to justice and government accountability.

Year 2
In your second year, you build deeper specialist knowledge. You’ll take Land Law and then choose from a range of modules that allow you to personalise your degree — whether you’re drawn to commercial law, social justice, or practical legal skills. Options may include Commercial Law, Environmental Law & Sustainability, Prepare for Practice, Sexual Offences and Offending, Cyberlaw, Employment Law, Migration Law & Policy, and more. This is where you begin tailoring your legal identity and future career direction.

Optional Placement or Study-Abroad Year
If you choose the sandwich-year pathway, you can spend a year working in industry or studying abroad after your second year. It’s an excellent chance to apply your knowledge in the real world, build your professional network, and return to your final year with meaningful experience.

Final Year (Year 3)
Your final year brings everything together. You’ll complete the core Student Lawyer module and choose three optional modules from a wide list, such as Advocacy & Evidence, Company Law in Context, Human Rights Law, International Business Law, Family Law, Law of Financial Crime, International Human Rights Law, and more. This year helps you develop specialist strengths, refine practical skills, and prepare for the next steps in your legal journey.

  • Specialist law library and digital research resources: A dedicated law collection and extensive legal databases support your studies, giving you strong research skills from the very beginning.
