MLaw (incorporating LLB(Hons)) Law and Practice

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Huddersfield

Program Overview

This MLaw (incorporating LLB (Hons)) Law and Practice degree at Huddersfield is a four-year integrated master’s that combines a full honours law degree with a strong emphasis on legal practice — preparing you fully for a career as a solicitor. It’s ideal for driven students who want both academic rigor and professional readiness, with training and experience tailored to the Solicitors Qualifying Exams (SQE).

Curriculum Structure

Years 1 & 2 – Legal Foundations

In the first two years, you’ll build a solid legal foundation through core modules like Contract Law, Criminal Law, Public Law, the English Legal System & Method, and Law in Society. These modules introduce you to both the theory and structure of law, ensuring you understand how statutes, cases and legal systems operate. At the same time, you’ll develop key professional and academic skills, such as legal research, critical thinking, and argumentation.

Year 3 – Practice-Focused Learning

Year three shifts your learning toward practical legal work. You’ll study modules such as Business Law & Practice, Property Law & Practice, Dispute Resolution and Criminal Litigation, which combine legal theory with real-world application — helping you develop practical skills in negotiation, litigation, conveyancing, and drafting. You’ll also take a Professional Conduct module, learning about legal ethics, regulation, and the rules that govern professional legal practice.

Year 4 – Master’s Integration & Specialisation

In your final year, you’ll integrate master’s-level learning with practice-based modules and optional academic electives. You’ll build on your practice skills with more advanced courses and possibly take modules like Commercial Law & Practice, Immigration & Asylum Law & Practice, or Family Law & Practice. Throughout the year, you’ll also engage in legal research and professional development that equips you for the Solicitors Qualifying Exams (SQE) or other career paths.

Reputation (Employability & Institutional Strength)

Huddersfield’s Law School combines practitioner teaching and academic expertise to deliver a highly employable degree. Many students graduate from this programme ready to step into law firms, in-house legal teams, or regulatory roles — the practical training and SQE focus give you a clear competitive edge in the legal job market.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Huddersfield, the MLaw Law and Practice is designed to help you develop not just legal knowledge but real professional skills that matter. You’ll work hands-on through a student-led Legal Advice Clinic where you advise real clients under supervision, and you’ll also have opportunities to argue cases in moots and develop your interviewing, drafting and advocacy skills. The Law School supports this with mentoring from qualified practitioners and access to legal technology and databases — helping you build your legal confidence in a genuine practice setting.

Here’s how the course delivers practical, career-focused legal training:

  • Legal Advice Clinic: As a student, you’ll participate in the clinic to work on real legal matters (like contract, employment or property law), interview clients, research legal issues, draft advice, and develop your client‑handling skills.

  • Professional Mentoring: You’re paired with a practicing lawyer or legal professional who offers guidance, support, and insight into the realities of legal work.

  • Mooting & Advocacy Practice: Join internal and external mooting competitions and mock trials — sharpen your public speaking, argumentation, and courtroom-style presentation.

  • Mock Courtroom Training: Use purpose-built courtroom facilities on campus to practice legal advocacy, negotiation, and real-life case simulations.

  • Optional Work Placements: Depending on the year and available options, you can take a full‑year placement with law firms or legal organisations to gain on‑the-job experience.

  • Legal Research & Resources: You’ll access professional legal databases (like Westlaw and Lexis), e‑libraries and tools that mirror what solicitors use, helping you to research and prepare for real legal work.

  • Practice-Focused Modules: Your course includes modules that are directly tied to legal practice — such as Dispute Resolution, Criminal Litigation, Business Law & Practice, and Property Law Practice — so you learn by doing.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from Huddersfield’s MLaw Law & Practice leave with both a strong academic grounding and real-world legal training — putting them in a great position for professional legal roles. Many go on to become Solicitors, Legal Advisors, Corporate Lawyers, or Compliance Officers, thanks to the degree’s practical focus and preparation for legal practice. The way the course is structured — with legal clinics, mooting, placements and professional mentoring — ensures you graduate with both knowledge and confidence to make the next move.

To help you land your first legal role and beyond, Huddersfield offers solid support and connections:

  • Dedicated Careers Support: The university’s Careers Service works closely with Law School students to offer CV guidance, interview prep, placement advice, and networking with law firms and legal employers.

  • Strong Professional Partnerships: Huddersfield’s Law School collaborates with local and national law firms and legal organisations, helping students gain placement opportunities and industry exposure.

  • Accreditation for Practice: This integrated MLaw provides the academic foundation needed for solicitor qualification, and the practical training aligns closely with professional training pathways.

  • Graduate Outcomes: Many alumni successfully transition into legal practice or legal-adjacent roles immediately after graduation, and the success of former students in securing training contracts, job offers or further academic study underscores the programme’s strength.

  • Long-Term Career Value: Because this degree blends academic understanding with professional skills, your qualification remains valuable in a variety of sectors — and gives you credibility for both practice and advisory roles.

Further Academic Progression:
After finishing the MLaw, you could study a postgraduate legal master’s (LLM) in specialist areas like commercial law, human rights law or dispute resolution. Alternatively, you could undertake research (MRes/PhD) or move on to postgraduate professional training, such as solicitor apprenticeships, the Solicitor’s Qualifying Exam route, or legal practice exams.
