The Law School at Strathclyde is one of Scotland’s premier institutions for legal education, offering a dynamic and engaging learning environment that prepares students for successful careers in law and beyond. Our expertise extends beyond the traditional foundations of law required for entry into the legal profession. Students have the opportunity to explore a diverse range of specialist areas, including construction law, criminology, human rights law, international economic law, information technology and telecommunications law, and mediation studies. This broad scope ensures that you develop a comprehensive legal education, preparing you to engage with contemporary legal challenges in an ever-evolving world.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

1. Strathclyde Law Clinic

  • Pro Bono Legal Assistance: The Strathclyde Law Clinic provides free legal assistance to individuals who cannot afford it but are not eligible for legal aid. Run by law student volunteers, the clinic offers students the opportunity to apply their legal knowledge in real-world scenarios, under the supervision of qualified solicitors. Founded in 2003, it is the first and largest law clinic in Scotland University of Strathclyde.​

2. Mooting Society

  • Mock Courtroom Experience: The Mooting Society at Strathclyde offers students the chance to participate in competitive mock courtroom hearings based on fictional legal disputes. This experience helps students hone their advocacy skills, improve legal research and analysis, and gain practical courtroom experience. Winners of internal competitions have the opportunity to win work experience at leading law firms, such as CMS University of Strathclyde.​

3. Mediation Clinic

  • Alternative Dispute Resolution: The Mediation Clinic provides students with practical training in mediation, an alternative dispute resolution method. Students learn to facilitate negotiations between parties, helping them develop skills in conflict resolution and communication .​University of Strathclyde

4. Ardcalloch Virtual Community

  • Simulated Legal Environment: Ardcalloch is a virtual community developed by the Law School where students can engage with simulated legal issues of everyday life. This platform allows students to apply their legal knowledge in a controlled environment, enhancing their problem-solving and analytical skills .​University of Strathclyde

5. Study Abroad Opportunities

  • International Exposure: LLB Law students at Strathclyde have the opportunity to spend the first semester of their final year studying abroad at one of the Law School's partner universities. This experience provides students with exposure to different legal systems and cultures, broadening their perspectives and enhancing their global employability .​

Progression & Future Opportunities

⚖️ Legal Career Pathways:

  • Solicitor: Graduates can pursue the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) to qualify as solicitors. Strathclyde's offers SQE-aligned support and practical legal training.

  • Barrister: Those aiming for the Bar can undertake a Bar Training Course (BTC) and apply for pupillage.

  • Other roles include paralegal, legal executive, advocate, or tribunal officer.

📚 Further Study & Specialisation:

  • LLM (Master of Laws) in areas like Criminal Justice, Human Rights, or International Law

  • Postgraduate diplomas in legal practice, dispute resolution, or compliance

  • PhD or MPhil for research or academic careers

💼 Careers Outside the Traditional Legal Route:

  • Solicitor – Requires passing the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE) and a two-year Qualifying Work Experience (QWE)
