MBiolSci Biological Sciences

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

The University of Sheffield

Program Overview

The MBiolSci Biological Sciences at The University of Sheffield is a four-year integrated master’s designed for those aiming to dive deep into research and graduate with a masters-level qualification. You’ll begin with a broad foundation in biology and, by year four, lead your own major research project in an area that excites you—whether that’s biodiversity, molecular health, or neuroscience.

Curriculum Structure

First Year
You’ll build a strong base in key principles—learning how genes shape life, how cells enable function, and how evolution drives change. This includes core modules like Building Blocks of Life, Genetics and Evolution, and Origins and Diversity of Life, complemented by Experimental Skills for Bioscientists and Professional Skills for Bioscientists, where you’ll practice lab techniques, data analysis, and collaborative digital communication.

Second Year
Now you get to specialise: choose a path such as Organisms and Environment, Form, Function and Behaviour, Mammalian Molecular Biosciences, or Molecular Bioscience of Animals and Plants. Alongside, in Advanced Professional Skills for Bioscientists, you’ll learn R programming and work on team-based Global Challenge projects that bring UN Sustainable Development Goals to life.

Third Year
Your third year focuses on preparation for your major research: you’ll draw on your chosen route to tackle hands-on lab, field, modelling, or science communication projects, guided toward developing independent research skills (this is described in the general overview).

Fourth Year
In your final year, you’ll immerse yourself in a substantial research project in the area you’re most passionate about—be it laboratory-based, computational, field-oriented, or communication-driven—and graduate with an integrated master’s qualification.

Focus Areas :
“Biodiversity & conservation; physiology and behaviour; mammalian molecular biosciences; molecular bioscience of plants and animals”

Learning Outcomes :
“Practical lab and field techniques; data analysis (including R); project design and management; scientific communication; independent research”

Professional Alignment (accreditation):
While not explicitly stated, this integrated master’s is built around research excellence and closely connected with leading research and NHS partnerships, ensuring rigorous training aligned with industry and academic expectations.

Reputation (employability rankings):
Sheffield is ranked top 100 globally for Life Sciences by THE Subject Rankings 2025, recognised in the UK’s top 20 most targeted universities by employers, and highly rated in the National Student Survey and employer markets

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

From day one, you’ll be immersed in hands-on science—learning not just in lectures, but deep within specialist labs, museums, field settings, and with the very latest research equipment. This program ensures you're not just absorbing knowledge—you’re practicing science: experimenting, collaborating, and conducting real-world research using advanced tools and expert support.

Here’s how that takes shape for you:

  • World-class laboratories and research hubs – Located across Firth Court, Alfred Denny, Florey, Perak, and Addison buildings, you'll learn through well-equipped lecture theatres, hands-on teaching labs, and comprehensive research facilities.

  • Advanced anatomical and microscopy facilities – Use the newly refurbished anatomy lab alongside trainee medics and explore anatomy, biodiversity, and evolution at the Alfred Denny Museum of Zoology.

  • Cutting-edge technologies – Access powerful tools like controlled-environment chambers, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics platforms, mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and high-resolution microscopy.

  • Field trips and field courses – You’ll deepen your practical skills from day one with trips to Sheffield’s green spaces, local zoos, aquariums, and nature reserves—and can opt for immersive field courses in diverse UK and global ecosystems.

  • Digital and group-based learning – Through modules like Professional Skills for Bioscientists, you’ll collaborate on team projects using digital tools, framing bioscience challenges inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

  • SURE (Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience) – Spend a summer (around six weeks) embedded in a real research group—applying and enhancing your research skills in a focused, discovery-driven environment.

  • Optional placement and overseas experiences – If you opt for an extended version of the program, you may add a placement year for substantial work experience in industry or research, or a year abroad with 250+ partner institutions worldwide.

  • Library and study support – Right across the road, Sheffield’s library network offers 24/7 digital access, physical and online collections, study spaces, and tailored support—ideal for both quiet study and high-powered research.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates of the MBiolSci Biological Sciences at The University of Sheffield are impressively well-prepared for the next step—equipped for roles based in research, healthcare, ecology, or scientific communication. In fact, typical starting positions include Research Scientist, Ecologist, Science Communicator, and Clinical Scientist, setting you up for impactful careers both in industry and academia.

Here’s how Sheffield supports your future success:

  • Careers & Employability Support
The University’s Careers & Employability Service offers tailored workshops on CV writing, applications, interview prep, networking, and placement opportunities—plus subject-specific guidance designed for bioscience pathways. You’ll benefit from practical support to kick-start your career.

  • Strong Employment Outcomes & Real-World Experience
Leveraging your placement year (if you opt for it), many students secure graduate-level work directly after placement—gaining a competitive edge before even graduating.

  • Valued Industry & Institutional Connections
You’ll tap into close partnerships with institutions like the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (NHS) for cancer and ageing research projects. These collaborations open doors for hands-on research experience and help bridge your academic and professional journeys.

  • Integrated Masters with Long-Term Value
The MBiolSci is an integrated master’s—meaning by the time you graduate, you'll hold a master's-level qualification—and you’ll have spent your fourth year concentrating on a major research project. This structure is ideal for students targeting careers in industrial or academic research, equipping you with advanced, professional-grade research skills.

  • Diverse Graduate Career Outcomes
Sheffield alumni pursue a broad spectrum of careers: research roles in universities or charities; ecology and conservation; health-related positions; and even broader sectors like science communication, HR, or marketing—with many graduates finding roles with high-profile employers.

Further Academic Progression:
Beyond work, many MBiolSci graduates continue with postgraduate study—such as PhD research, medical or veterinary programs, or specialized fields like genetic counselling or teaching—building on the strong independent research foundation you’ll have developed in your fourth year.
