4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Manchester

Program Overview

This course blends strong training in the biological sciences with the added advantage of mastering a modern language such as French, Spanish, Mandarin, or Japanese—a rare combination that sets you apart in the global job market. It’s designed for students who want to explore both life sciences and cultural perspectives, with the added highlight of a year abroad or an overseas research placement.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll lay down a solid foundation in core biological concepts through units like Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, From Molecules to Cells, Introduction to Laboratory Science, and Biodiversity. About a third of your time is devoted to your chosen language, combining both language and cultural studies to broaden your learning.

Year 2
Your biology knowledge and language skills deepen this year, alongside a Science Communication unit that builds your confidence in explaining complex ideas. By the end of this stage, with strong language progress, you’ll be ready to take on an exciting year abroad or placement at a partner institution.

Year 3
You’ll spend this year overseas on a language-based research placement, fully immersing yourself in another culture while advancing both your scientific and linguistic abilities through hands-on experience.

Year 4
In your final year, you’ll tackle advanced biology topics and complete an independent research project. This can focus on areas like lab work, digital biology, bioinformatics, enterprise, or science communication—giving you the freedom to tailor your degree to your own interests and career goals.

Focus areas: “Foundational biology, language integration, international exposure, research-driven learning.”

Learning outcomes: “Students graduate with scientific depth, communication proficiency in another language, research skill, and global perspective.”

Professional alignment (accreditation): The degree is Advanced Accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, giving you a fast track to MRSB membership and an early route into Chartered Biologist/Scientist status.

Reputation (employability): The University of Manchester is a globally recognised research leader within the Russell Group, ranked among the top 30 worldwide (QS 2021) and renowned for strong employer connections.

When you study BSc Biology with a Modern Language at Manchester, you won’t just learn science in the classroom—you’ll live it. The course combines cutting-edge biology training with cultural and language immersion, helping you think, act, and communicate like a truly global scientist. From lab experiments and fieldwork to a year abroad, your learning is designed to connect theory with real-world experience:

Here’s how your learning comes to life:

  • Field courses across the globe – Step into real ecosystems on optional trips ranging from UK-based fieldwork to biodiversity-rich destinations abroad. Whether it’s marine biology, animal behaviour, or Mediterranean conservation, you’ll experience biology where it happens.

  • Year-long language-based research placement – Spend your third year abroad in Europe, China, or Japan, carrying out research while fully immersed in the language and culture. This experience sharpens both your scientific and linguistic skills in a real-world setting.

  • Modern teaching labs & practical skill development – From your very first year, you’ll train in specialist bioscience labs, learning essential techniques in genetics, cell biology, data analysis, and experimental methods.

  • Ethical and sustainability-oriented learning – Work on real projects through the University’s Ethical Grand Challenges and Living Lab, tackling issues like climate action and sustainability alongside community and industry partners.

  • Language learning in a scientific context – You’ll study alongside dedicated language students, gaining not just fluency but cultural understanding—an invaluable skill as you combine biology with global perspectives.

Progression & Future Opportunities
