4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
If you’re curious about how medicines are discovered, developed, and produced, this degree is a perfect fit. It combines a deep dive into chemistry with hands-on lab experience, and the added year abroad gives you a unique global perspective that will set you apart.
Curriculum structure:
Year 1
You’ll start by building a strong foundation in chemistry, covering key areas like Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry, along with Fundamentals of Spectroscopy and Practical Chemistry. This year is all about understanding how molecules behave, learning essential lab skills, and getting comfortable with the tools chemists use every day.
Year 2
In your second year, you’ll move into more specialised areas related to pharmaceuticals. Modules such as Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Applied Spectroscopy, and Structure & Reactivity in Organic Chemistry help you see how molecules can be turned into medicines. You’ll also pick up useful skills like programming for chemists and advanced lab techniques that prepare you for real-world research.
Year 3 (Year Abroad)
This is your chance to study at a partner university overseas. You’ll take chemistry modules abroad, gain international experience, and broaden your professional and cultural horizons. It’s a year that makes you more adaptable, independent, and ready for global careers.
Year 4 (Final Year)
Back in the UK, your final year focuses on advanced topics and independent research. You’ll explore Advanced Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Organic Synthesis, and complete a research project of your choice. It’s the year to bring everything together, apply your knowledge to real problems, and develop professional skills that employers value.
Focus areas:
Drug design, chemical synthesis, pharmacology, analytical methods, and global experience through a year abroad.
Learning outcomes:
You’ll graduate able to design and optimise potential medicines, understand their chemical and biological behaviour, perform advanced lab work, and work confidently in international or cross-disciplinary settings.
Professional alignment (accreditation):
This programme is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), giving graduates Associate Member status.
Reputation (employability rankings):
QMUL Chemistry is highly regarded: 8th in the UK for research impact and 9th for research output (REF 2021). Around 93% of graduates go on to work or further study within six months, giving you a strong start in your career.
From day one, you’ll be learning by doing. The programme is designed so that theory and practice go hand in hand — you won’t just read about molecules and reactions, you’ll make and analyse them in world-class labs. You’ll gain hands-on experience using modern instruments, explore computational and analytical tools, and even spend a year abroad applying your skills in a different academic and cultural setting. This approach helps you build confidence, independence, and practical skills that employers love.
Here’s how you’ll experience learning first-hand:
Work in the state-of-the-art Joseph Priestley Building labs, fitted with modern fume cupboards and benchtop equipment that mirrors real pharmaceutical research environments.
Conduct an independent research project in your final year, choosing between lab-based experiments or literature-focused investigations.
Use advanced modules like Computational Chemistry, Advanced Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy, and Organic Synthesis to get hands-on with cutting-edge software, modelling tools, and instrumentation.
Spend a year abroad at a partner university, gaining international exposure and cross-cultural skills while continuing your chemistry studies.
Benefit from industry connections through placements and collaborations, giving you a taste of real-world drug discovery and development.
Access modern IT and lab facilities, including lab simulations and digital tools, to reinforce practical skills before entering the lab.
Graduates from this programme leave ready to take on exciting roles such as a pharmaceutical research scientist, analytical chemist in industry, drug development specialist, or even a data and analytical consultant. Thanks to your hands-on lab experience, advanced chemical knowledge, and the global perspective gained from the year abroad, you’ll have both the technical skills and the confidence to thrive in a competitive job market.
