Pharmaceutical Science BSc (Hons)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Teesside University

Program Overview

Teesside University’s BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical Science gives you a strong scientific foundation while showing you exactly how medicines are discovered, developed, and taken to market. It’s a great fit if you love chemistry and biology and want a career where you can make a real impact in areas like drug development, quality control, or the wider pharmaceutical industry.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

Your first year is all about building confidence in the core sciences. You explore the fundamentals through modules like Biochemistry and Chemical Science, Cell Biology, Introduction to Organic Chemistry, and Structure and Bonding, giving you a deep understanding of molecules and how they behave. You’ll also gain hands-on skills in Synthetic Laboratory Skills, where you learn essential lab techniques used every day in pharmaceutical research.

Year 2

In second year, you apply that foundation to more advanced scientific concepts. Human Metabolism and Clinical Biochemistry helps you understand how the body processes drugs, while Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics introduces techniques such as PCR, sequencing, and data analysis. You continue strengthening your analytical toolkit through Structure Determination—learning NMR, mass spectrometry, IR, and UV spectroscopy—and explore industrial applications in Bioreactors and Fermentation, a key part of modern biologics production.

Work Placement Year (Optional)

If you choose the optional placement year, you’ll work directly with industry professionals, gaining experience that can give your CV a major boost. It’s a great chance to put your skills into practice, build confidence, and make connections that can shape your future career.

Final Year

Your final year brings everything together. In Advanced Organic Chemistry, you study modern synthetic methods and dive into the chemistry behind drug molecules. Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Discovery walks you through how new medicines are designed and tested, while Biologics and Health Product Development and Biotherapeutics give you insight into how biotech products are produced, refined, and regulated. You’ll also complete a Science Research Project, where you investigate a topic of your choice and develop the analytical and problem-solving skills employers value most.

Focus Areas

Drug discovery, molecular biology, advanced chemistry, fermentation and bioprocessing, biologics development, and regulatory insights.

Learning Outcomes

By graduation, you’ll be able to design and analyse pharmaceutical compounds, work confidently with advanced lab and analytical techniques, understand the full drug development process, and evaluate bioprocesses used in modern medicine manufacturing.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

This degree is designed for scientific and industry-focused career paths rather than professional pharmacist registration. (Teesside’s MPharm program is the one progressing through GPhC accreditation.)

Reputation (Employability Rankings)

Teesside University holds a TEF Gold rating for outstanding teaching and student outcomes. It also ranks 43rd in the UK for graduate prospects (Complete University Guide 2026), with Pharmaceutical Science graduates earning around £30.3k three years after finishing their degree.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

One of the best things about studying Pharmaceutical Science at Teesside University is how much real, hands-on experience you get from day one. You’ll spend a lot of time in specialist science labs, working with the same equipment and techniques used across the pharmaceutical and bioprocessing industries. You’ll also have access to the National Horizons Centre, a major biosciences research hub, giving you the chance to learn in a professional-level environment that brings your scientific knowledge to life.

Here’s how that practical learning experience unfolds throughout your degree:

  • Specialist science laboratories: You’ll carry out experiments in dedicated chemistry, molecular biology, and bioprocessing labs, using modern equipment for analysis, fermentation, and chemical synthesis.

  • National Horizons Centre access: This £22 million facility supports training in bioreactors, fermentation systems, upstream and downstream bioprocessing, and advanced analytical tools used across the biotech sector.

  • Digital and computer-based sessions: The course includes computer laboratory work, including simulations and digital structure-drawing software to help you visualise molecules and understand chemical reactions.

  • Working in teams: Throughout your modules, you’ll take part in group projects, poster sessions, and presentations — helping you develop teamwork and communication skills that employers look for.

  • Final-year research project: You’ll design and carry out your own Science Research Project, working closely with an academic supervisor and using the university’s research-grade equipment.

  • Optional placement year: If you choose the placement route, you’ll spend a year in industry building real-world experience, strengthening your CV, and making professional connections.

  • Virtual learning support: Every module is backed by Teesside’s virtual learning environment, where you can access materials, take part in online workshops, and stay on top of your coursework.
