4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
The MChem Chemistry with an Industrial Placement Year at the University of Sheffield is perfect if you want to combine a deep understanding of chemistry with hands-on experience in the real world. Over four years, you’ll explore core areas like organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry, while also spending a full year working in industry, building skills that employers really value.
Curriculum Structure:
Year 1: You’ll get a solid grounding in the basics with modules like Fundamentals of Chemistry 1 & 2 and The Chemical World Around Us: from Biological Chemistry to Sustainability. Expect to learn about atoms and molecules, bonding, core chemical reactions, and essential lab techniques, all while discovering how chemistry connects to everyday life and the environment.
Year 2: This year deepens your knowledge, covering organic reactions, coordination chemistry, and analytical techniques. You’ll also have optional modules in areas like medicinal chemistry or sustainable chemistry, allowing you to start exploring your own interests and specialisms.
Year 3 (Industrial Placement Year): This is your chance to step into the professional world. You’ll spend the year working with an industrial partner, applying your chemistry knowledge to real projects, gaining practical skills, and building a CV that stands out. Many students even turn their placement into a job offer!
Year 4: Back at Sheffield, you’ll take advanced modules like Advanced Materials Chemistry, Catalysis and Asymmetric Synthesis, and Methods and Models in Theoretical Chemistry. You’ll also carry out an in-depth research project, working closely with experienced supervisors in one of the department’s research labs. This is where you really pull together everything you’ve learned and show what you can do.
Focus areas: Industrial placements, advanced materials & catalysis, theoretical chemistry, sustainability, pharmaceuticals & materials chemistry.
Learning outcomes: You’ll graduate with strong lab and analytical skills, hands-on industrial experience, the ability to carry out independent research, and the confidence to apply chemistry knowledge to real-world challenges. You’ll also develop excellent teamwork and communication skills.
Professional alignment (accreditation): Accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), meeting the requirements for Chartered Chemist (CChem) status.
Reputation (employability & rankings): Sheffield ranks in the top 100 globally (QS World University Rankings 2026: 92nd) and the chemistry program is consistently highly regarded in the UK.
At Sheffield, you won’t just be learning chemistry from books—you’ll be doing it, hands-on, from day one. You’ll work in state-of-the-art teaching labs, use cutting-edge analytical instruments, tackle group projects, and even spend a full year gaining real-world experience in industry. From developing practical lab skills to learning how chemistry works in a commercial setting, this programme is designed to give you confidence and expertise that employers value.
Here’s what your hands-on experience will include:
Specialist teaching labs in the Dainton and Richard Roberts Buildings, each dedicated to organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry practicals.
Advanced analytical equipment such as NMR, IR and UV spectrometers, and gas- and size-exclusion chromatography, giving you early exposure to industry-standard tools.
Research-grade facilities like the Lord Porter Ultrafast Laser Spectroscopy Laboratory, the Soft Matter Analytical Laboratory, and the Sheffield Surface Analysis Centre, perfect for projects and extended investigations.
Industrial placement year (Year 3) with leading companies such as AstraZeneca, Unilever, GSK, or EDF Energy, where you’ll apply your knowledge in a professional environment, complete a placement report, and gain invaluable workplace experience.
Small-group tutorials and workshops to boost your lab techniques, data analysis, and scientific communication.
Library and digital resources, with 24/7 access to books, periodicals, computers, and spaces for group projects or independent study.
Graduates from this programme leave Sheffield ready to make an impact in the world of chemistry. Whether you want to work as a research chemist in a lab, a product development specialist in industry, a chemical analyst, or a sustainability chemist, this degree gives you the skills and confidence to succeed. With the combination of a strong academic foundation and a full year of industrial placement, you’ll be well prepared to step straight into professional roles:
University support for employment: The Careers & Employability Service offers one-to-one advice, access to thousands of job vacancies, career workshops, and dedicated placement year support through the Career Connect portal.
Employment stats & salary: Sheffield graduates in chemistry report starting salaries around £27,000–£33,500, depending on sector and employer.
Industry connections: Your placement year connects you with top organisations like Unilever, AstraZeneca, GSK, Reckitt, and EDF Energy, giving you real-world experience and valuable networking opportunities.
Accreditation benefits: The course is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), which means your degree meets the requirements for Chartered Chemist (CChem) status — a mark of professional excellence.
Graduation outcomes: Alumni go on to work in pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, environmental science, and more, using the project planning, data analysis, and problem-solving skills developed throughout the programme.
Further Academic Progression:
