Chemistry with Industrial Experience MChem

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Huddersfield

Program Overview

The MChem Chemistry with Industrial Experience at the University of Huddersfield is perfect for students who love chemistry and want to take it beyond the classroom. You’ll gain solid scientific knowledge while also getting hands-on industrial experience, preparing you for exciting careers in pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, environmental science, and more.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

In your first year, you’ll build a strong foundation in chemistry. You’ll explore Atoms to Molecules and Materials, understand Carbon Compounds and Reactivity, and learn key physical chemistry through States of Matter, Kinetics and Thermodynamics. You’ll also get practical skills in Analytical Science and Spectroscopy and Techniques of Practical Chemistry, giving you confidence in the lab from the start.

Year 2

The second year dives deeper into the four pillars of chemistry: inorganic, organic, physical, and analytical. Modules like Coordination Complexes and Inorganic Materials and Methods and Strategies in Organic Synthesis teach advanced reactions and techniques. Physical Chemistry: Principles of Chemical Change and Molecular Analysis & Instrumental Methods help you connect theory with real-world lab work, while practical projects sharpen your problem-solving skills.

Year 3 (Placement Year)

This year is all about real-world experience. You’ll spend around a year working in industry, applying your knowledge to actual chemical challenges. The placement lets you develop professional skills, build a portfolio, and understand how chemistry is used in real companies, giving you a huge head start in your career.

Year 4

In your final year, you’ll tackle advanced topics and complete a major research project. Modules like Advanced General Chemistry, Targeted Synthesis of Organic Compounds, and Surfaces, Polymers and Theoretical Chemistry push your understanding to the next level. Your research project allows you to explore your own interests in chemistry under expert supervision, giving you both independence and guidance.
