Chemistry with Foundation Year BSc

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Leicester

Program Overview

This four-year Chemistry degree starts with a foundation year, designed to give you the confidence and skills you need before diving into full undergraduate study. It’s perfect for students who love chemistry but want a strong start in maths, science, and lab skills to make sure they hit the ground running.

Curriculum Structure
Foundation Year
In the foundation year, you’ll get a solid grounding in the basics. You’ll study Fundamental Mathematics, Waves and Matter, Introduction to Chemistry, and practical chemistry skills, while also learning data analysis and scientific computing. It’s all about building the confidence to succeed in higher-level chemistry.

Year 1
Year 1 introduces you to the core areas of chemistry. You’ll explore General Chemistry, Introductory Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and hands-on labs, while learning how chemistry connects to real-world sustainability and environmental issues. It’s where you start thinking like a chemist.

Year 2
Year 2 takes things further with more advanced topics. You’ll dive into Spectroscopy, Analytical Chemistry, Polymers and Materials, and more in-depth organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry. Lab work becomes more independent, and you’ll start tackling real chemical problems with confidence.

Year 3 (Final Year)
In your final year, you’ll focus on your own research project and advanced modules like Advanced Organic Chemistry and Advanced Inorganic Chemistry. You’ll also pick optional modules, letting you tailor your studies to your interests, whether that’s materials, analytical techniques, or sustainability. By the end, you’ll be ready for a career in chemistry or further study.

Focus areas:
“Core chemistry disciplines, practical lab skills, analytical methods, materials & polymers, research projects, sustainability, employability skills”

Learning outcomes:
“Gain deep knowledge across chemistry disciplines, master lab and analytical techniques, develop critical thinking and research skills, and be ready to work independently or in teams in scientific environments.”

Professional alignment (accreditation):
Accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).

Reputation (employability rankings):
Leicester graduates are highly employable: 100% of chemistry students were in work or further study six months after graduating. The School of Chemistry also ranks highly in student satisfaction and has a gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Leicester, learning chemistry isn’t just about reading textbooks — it’s about rolling up your sleeves and getting hands-on from day one. You’ll spend time in fully-equipped laboratories, working with modern instruments and real chemical reactions, while also developing skills in data analysis, problem-solving, and teamwork. The program gives you access to specialist facilities, software, and research labs, so you’ll gain practical experience that prepares you for careers or further study. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Work with industry-standard software like ChemDraw, Spartan, and ACD Labs in dedicated computer suites.

  • Participate in small-group tutorials and problem-solving sessions, where you can discuss practical work, troubleshoot experiments, and learn collaboratively.

  • Get hands-on lab experience every week, building from 4–6 hours in early years to 10–12 hours in your final-year research project.

  • Use high-end analytical instruments such as NMR spectrometers, X-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry, and FTIR for real chemical analysis.

  • Learn in modern teaching labs designed for large groups, equipped with fume hoods, specialist glassware, and an instrument room.

  • Undertake a final-year research project, working in real research labs under expert supervision.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduating from this programme means you’ll be ready for a wide range of chemistry-related careers. Many alumni move into roles such as Analytical Chemist, Materials Scientist, Environmental Chemist, or R&D Chemist. The course not only gives you strong chemistry knowledge but also practical skills, lab experience, and professional confidence that employers value:

  • Careers support: Leicester’s dedicated Careers & Employability Service offers one-to-one guidance, CV and interview help, placements, and ongoing alumni support.

  • Employment stats: 100% of chemistry graduates were in work or further study within six months of graduating.

  • Salary insights: Leicester chemistry graduates report median earnings around £29,000 after 15 months, rising to £32,000 after five years.

  • Industry links: Students benefit from university partnerships with companies like Phillips 66 and other chemical or manufacturing firms, offering real-world experience and networking opportunities.

  • Accreditation value: The degree is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry, adding strong professional recognition and opening doors to chartered chemist status.

  • Graduation outcomes: Alumni leave with the skills and confidence to step straight into chemistry roles or further study, equipped to tackle real-world challenges.

Further Academic Progression:
If you want to continue your studies, you could pursue a master’s (MSc) or a PhD in chemistry or related fields such as materials science, pharmaceuticals, or sustainability. The final-year research project gives you a strong foundation for postgraduate study or research-focused careers.
