3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
This degree is perfect if you’re fascinated by how drugs are discovered, developed, and delivered, and want the chance to study abroad for a year. You’ll gain a solid foundation in chemistry while exploring the global side of science, making it ideal for curious minds who want both lab experience and an international perspective.
Curriculum structure:
Year 1: You’ll start with the basics of chemistry and laboratory skills, taking modules like Core Chemistry 1A: Structure, Bonding & Change, Core Chemistry 1B: Reactions, Mechanisms & Sustainability Principles, and Foundations of Chemistry: Maths, Physics & Biology for Chemists. Alongside this, Introductory Medicinal Chemistry & Physiology introduces you to the world of drugs and how they affect the body, giving you a strong start for future years.
Year 2: You’ll build on your first-year foundation with modules like Core Chemistry 2A: Thermodynamics, Transition Metals & Synthetic Methods and Core Chemistry 2B: Spectroscopy & Sustainable Synthesis Strategies. At the same time, drug-focused modules such as Drug Design Principles & Quantitative Skills and Drug Discovery & Development help you explore how chemistry directly links to medicine, while your lab work and practical skills continue to grow.
Year 3 (Year Abroad): This is your chance to study at one of Liverpool’s partner universities overseas. You’ll experience a new academic environment, broaden your perspective, and continue developing your chemistry and medicinal chemistry knowledge while living in a different culture.
Year 4: Back in Liverpool, you’ll tackle advanced modules like Translational Pharmacology, Further Medicinal Chemistry, and Current Topics in Synthetic Design & Advanced Materials. You’ll also complete a substantial research project or industrial placement, honing your practical, problem-solving, and research skills while connecting theory to real-world applications in medicinal chemistry.
Focus areas:
Medicinal chemistry, drug design and development, synthetic and analytical chemistry, lab and digital skills, sustainability, international experience.
Learning outcomes:
By the end of the course, you’ll have strong lab and analytical skills, a deep understanding of drug development, problem-solving confidence, and the ability to work in international or industrial settings.
Professional alignment (accreditation):
Accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), this degree opens doors to professional chemical careers and postgraduate study.
Reputation (employability rankings):
Liverpool Chemistry graduates are highly employable, with around 90% in work or further study within 15 months of graduating, often in graduate-level roles.
At Liverpool, this degree is all about doing as much as learning. From your very first year, you’ll be spending time in real laboratories, using modern equipment, running experiments, and applying theory to practice. You’ll also develop digital skills, work on group projects, and gain international experience during your year abroad — all designed to make you confident and work-ready by the time you graduate.
Here’s how you’ll gain hands-on experience:
Practical lab work: Starting with core chemistry experiments in Year 1 and progressing to more advanced synthetic, analytical, and research-based work in later years.
State-of-the-art facilities: Work in Liverpool’s Central Teaching Laboratories, equipped for both chemical synthesis and measurement, with full access to modern instruments.
Digital chemistry tools & modelling: Learn computational chemistry and digital skills that are increasingly vital in drug design and research.
Collaborative projects: Team up with peers to tackle real-world problems, like sustainable chemistry challenges, building your communication and teamwork abilities.
Final-year research project: Undertake a substantial 30-credit extended project, either in the labs, with a research group, or via an industry placement.
Year abroad: Spend a full year at an approved partner university overseas, experiencing a different academic culture and broadening your global perspective.
Professional skill development: From presenting your work to reflecting on your experiments and giving peer feedback, you’ll build employability skills throughout your degree.
Graduating from this programme puts you in a strong position to step straight into exciting roles in the pharmaceutical, chemical, or biotech sectors. You could find yourself working as an Analytical Scientist, a Development Chemist, or a Research Scientist, applying your chemistry knowledge to develop new drugs and make a real impact. With your practical skills, digital expertise, and international experience, you’ll stand out to employers around the world.
Here’s how Liverpool supports you along the way:
Careers & Employability Service: Get one-to-one guidance on career planning, CVs, interviews, networking, and connecting with potential employers in chemistry and pharmaceutical industries.
Strong graduate outcomes: Chemistry graduates move into roles with companies like AstraZeneca, GlaxoSmithKline, Unilever, and PwC, reflecting the degree’s excellent employability.
Professional accreditation: The programme is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), which adds credibility and long-term value to your degree in the eyes of employers.
