BSc Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Manchester

Program Overview

This degree combines a solid grounding in all areas of chemistry — from organic to physical to analytical — with a specialist focus on medicinal chemistry. It’s perfect for students who are curious about how molecules interact with living systems, passionate about drug discovery, and excited to explore how chemistry can improve health and medicine.

Curriculum Structure
Year 1
Your first year lays the foundation in core chemistry, covering topics like bonding, organic reactions, and the basics of thermodynamics and quantum mechanics. You’ll also start exploring medicinal chemistry, learning about biology for chemists and the role of chemical principles in drug discovery — giving you an early taste of how chemistry connects to real-world medicine.

Year 2
In the second year, you’ll go deeper into the major branches of chemistry while building strong lab skills in analysis, synthesis, and experimental design. The medicinal chemistry strand expands too, exploring the chemistry behind medicines and how new drugs are designed to tackle health challenges.

Year 3
The final year gives you the chance to specialise and take on advanced topics. You’ll study modules like Advanced Drug Discovery and Synthesis for Drug Discovery and Development, while working on hands-on lab projects that give you real research experience. By the end, you’ll be confident in both your chemistry knowledge and practical skills.

Focus Areas:
“Core chemistry (organic, inorganic, physical, analytical) + medicinal chemistry (drug discovery, biochemistry, pharmaceuticals) + laboratory research and practical skills”

Learning Outcomes:
“Understand and apply chemical theory across different systems; master lab techniques including synthesis and analysis; interpret chemical biology in drug design; develop independent problem-solving and research skills”

Professional Alignment (Accreditation):
This degree is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), meeting academic requirements for RSC membership and partially fulfilling the path to becoming a Chartered Chemist (CChem).

Reputation (Employability & Rankings):
The University of Manchester is ranked 4th in the UK for Chemistry by QS, with graduates enjoying strong employment prospects — over 80% move into graduate-level roles or further study within six months.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Manchester, learning chemistry isn’t just about lectures — it’s about getting your hands on real experiments from day one. You’ll spend lots of time in purpose-built labs, using the same instruments and techniques that professional chemists rely on in research and industry. As you progress, you’ll move from structured experiments to mini-projects and more independent work, especially in medicinal chemistry, giving you a genuine feel for what working as a chemist is like.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical experience:

  • Work in modern undergraduate laboratories to carry out practical experiments in synthesis, analysis, and measurement.

  • Use specialist instruments such as high-resolution NMR spectrometers and X-ray crystallography tools to explore chemical structures.

  • Take part in small-group tutorials and peer-assisted study sessions to solve real problems and deepen your understanding.

  • Develop lab safety, data analysis, and experimental design skills through structured practical courses.

  • Get exposure to real research environments via the Department’s active research community and links with over 80 industry partners and international universities.

  • Combine computer and IT skills with lab-based work, including courses in medicinal biochemistry and drug discovery fundamentals.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduating from this programme gives you a strong foundation to launch an exciting career in chemistry and beyond. Many graduates move into roles such as Medicinal Chemist, Analytical Chemist, Pharmaceutical Development Scientist, or even positions in Science Policy or Communication, thanks to the mix of practical lab skills and chemical knowledge you’ll develop. Here’s how Manchester helps you take the next step:

  • The University’s Careers Service offers dedicated support, including employability events, one-to-one guidance, and connections with alumni and industry partners like the Royal Society of Chemistry.

  • Over 80% of recent graduates from this degree were in graduate-level roles or further study within six months of finishing.

  • Chemistry graduates from Manchester typically earn around £29,000 15 months after graduation, with a common range of £25,000–£33,000.

  • The course is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry, which helps you on the path to becoming a Chartered Chemist (CChem) and adds long-term professional credibility.

  • Strong links with industry and research partners mean you’ll graduate with a degree recognised and respected by employers worldwide.

  • Beyond chemistry-specific roles, you’ll also leave with transferable skills—like analytical thinking, problem solving, and communication—that open doors in biotech, regulatory affairs, intellectual property, and more.

Further Academic Progression:
If you’re keen to dive deeper, you could continue your studies with a Master’s (MSc) in Medicinal Chemistry, Drug Discovery, or Pharmaceutical Sciences, or even pursue a PhD in Medicinal or Synthetic Chemistry. This would prepare you for advanced research, leadership roles in industry, or an academic career.
