Chemistry BSc (Hons)

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Sussex

Program Overview

If you’re curious about how molecules work, why reactions happen, or how materials around us are made, the Chemistry BSc at Sussex is the perfect place to explore. You’ll gain hands-on lab experience from the start while learning the core principles of physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry – all designed to make you confident in understanding and solving real-world chemical problems.

Curriculum structure:
Year 1: Your first year sets the foundation. You’ll get stuck into Chemistry Laboratory 1, explore Electrons in Atoms and Molecules, and develop Transferrable Skills for Chemists. It’s all about learning the basics, getting comfortable in the lab, and building problem-solving skills that will carry you through the degree.

Year 2: Year two dives deeper. You’ll take on Core Laboratory Skills for Chemists 1, tackle Researching and Communicating Chemistry, and understand Structure Determination in Organic and Inorganic Chemistry as well as Symmetry, Bonding and Molecular Spectroscopy. Here, you’ll start connecting theory to practice, gaining real research experience, and learning how to explain complex chemistry clearly.

Year 3: In your final year, it’s time to think and work like a professional chemist. Modules like Coordination and Organometallic Chemistry, Mechanism in Organic and Biological Chemistry, and Phases, Transitions and Reaction Kinetics give you the chance to lead projects, analyze data independently, and apply everything you’ve learned to practical challenges.

Focus areas:
Physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry, chemical analysis, laboratory techniques, data interpretation, teamwork, and communication.

Learning outcomes:
You’ll graduate ready to design experiments, interpret complex chemical data, use modern lab equipment, work confidently in teams, and communicate scientific ideas effectively.

Professional alignment (accreditation):
Accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry, this degree helps you take the first step towards becoming a Chartered Chemist (CChem).

Reputation (employability rankings):
Sussex Chemistry graduates enjoy excellent career prospects: the department is ranked 4th in the UK for graduate employability (Complete University Guide 2026), and 8th for research impact in Chemistry (REF 2021).

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Sussex, chemistry isn’t just about reading textbooks — you’ll be rolling up your sleeves in the lab from day one. You’ll get hands-on experience with real chemical experiments, learn how to use instruments like Mass Spectrometers and NMR machines, and practice analyzing data just like a professional chemist. Along the way, you’ll also pick up programming and computational skills, work in teams, and even have opportunities to get a taste of real-world research through optional placements or internships.

Here’s how you’ll gain practical, career-ready experience:

  • Working in state-of-the-art teaching laboratories with modules like Chemistry Laboratory 1 and 2, where you’ll conduct synthesis, separation, and analysis experiments.

  • Using specialized software and computational tools for chemical data analysis and simulations.

  • Accessing advanced instrumentation such as Mass Spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy to explore molecules in depth.

  • Taking part in optional placements or internships in industry or research, supported by Sussex’s Careers and Entrepreneurship team.

  • Opportunities to study abroad or engage in international projects, expanding your experience and perspective.

  • Developing essential skills like teamwork, communication, time management, and independent problem-solving through lab projects and group work.
