BSc Microbiology with Industrial/Professional Experience

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Manchester

Program Overview

This degree is more than just studying microbes in textbooks—you’ll explore bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa in depth and spend a year in a real workplace, either in the UK or abroad. By combining academic learning with hands-on industry or research experience, the course prepares you with the skills and confidence that employers are looking for.

How the course is structured

Year 1
You’ll build a solid foundation in microbiology, learning how microorganisms work at the molecular, biochemical, and genetic levels. Core modules like From Molecules to Cells and introductory lab training set you up with essential knowledge and techniques.

Year 2
The focus shifts towards more specialised topics, including microbial pathogenesis and infectious disease. You’ll also have room to tailor your learning through optional modules, helping you shape the degree around your own interests.

Year 3 – Placement year
This is where the programme stands out. You’ll step out of the lecture hall and into a professional environment—whether it’s a biotech company, a hospital lab, or a research institute, in the UK or overseas. It’s a chance to apply your learning, gain real-world experience, and make valuable connections for your future career.

Year 4
Back in Manchester, you’ll dive into advanced microbiology and undertake an independent research project. This capstone year brings together everything you’ve learned—academic, practical, and professional—so you graduate with both expertise and experience.

What you’ll focus on

  • Microbial biology in depth

  • Developing specialist lab and research skills

  • Applying science in professional and industrial settings

What you’ll get out of it

  • The ability to master core microbiology and apply it in real-world contexts

  • Professional confidence from a year-long industry placement
