Sheffield Hallam’s MPhys Physics is a future-focused, research-driven master’s degree that blends theory with hands-on experimentation from day one. It’s ideal for students who want to push boundaries, solve complex problems, and work on real-world physics and technology projects — all while gaining deep expertise across quantum physics, astrophysics, materials science, and more.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1
You’ll build a strong foundation in classical and modern physics through modules like Classical Mechanics and Electromagnetism and Quantum Physics and Atomic Structure. Lab sessions and project-based assignments help you apply theory to real-world scenarios, while group discussions and field visits introduce you to collaborative learning and industry contexts.
Year 2
This year deepens your understanding of thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and cosmology. You’ll explore modules such as Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics and Astrophysics and Cosmology, while developing advanced lab skills and computational techniques. You’ll also begin preparing for your placement year, supported by the Careers & Employability Team.
Optional Placement Year
You can take a year-long paid placement between Year 2 and Year 3, gaining professional experience and earning an Applied Professional Diploma. Past placements include roles with Rutherford Appleton Laboratories, Rolls-Royce, and HSBC, giving you a competitive edge in the job market.
Year 3
You’ll tackle advanced topics like Materials Science and Nanotechnology and Advanced Computational Physics. This year includes live industry-linked projects, where you’ll work in active research groups and apply your skills to real-world challenges. You’ll also begin scoping your final-year research project.
Final Year
Your final year is all about specialisation and leadership in physics. You’ll complete a major research project, collaborate with industry or academic mentors, and refine your expertise in areas like optics, quantum systems, or data modelling. You’ll graduate with a master’s-level qualification and the confidence to lead in science and technology.
Focus Areas
Quantum physics, astrophysics, materials science, nanotechnology, thermodynamics, computational physics, electromagnetism.
Learning Outcomes
Graduates master advanced theoretical and experimental physics, computational modelling, scientific research, and problem-solving — ready for careers in research, industry, or academia.
Professional Alignment (Accreditation)
Fully accredited by the Institute of Physics (IOP), ensuring the course meets national standards and supports Chartered Physicist status.
Reputation (Employability Rankings)
Sheffield Hallam holds a Gold rating in the 2023 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and reports 95% of UK graduates in work or further study within 15 months.
Sheffield Hallam’s MPhys Physics is built around doing real science — not just learning about it. From your first year, you’ll be working in specialist labs, using advanced software, and collaborating on live research projects. Whether you're modelling quantum systems, analysing materials at the nanoscale, or exploring the cosmos, you’ll gain hands-on experience that prepares you for careers in research, technology, and industry.
You won’t just study physics — you’ll live it through practical modules, group projects, and access to cutting-edge tools and facilities. Here’s what that looks like:
This is experiential learning at its best — preparing you to lead in science, technology, and innovation.
Graduates of Sheffield Hallam’s MPhys Physics are highly sought after in research, technology, and data-driven industries. With advanced skills in quantum systems, computational modelling, and experimental physics, they step into roles such as research scientist, data analyst, software developer, or aerospace technologist. Many also work in sectors like defence, energy, and telecommunications — or continue into PhD-level study.
