Program Overview

Sheffield Hallam’s MPhys Physics is a future-focused, research-driven master’s degree that blends theory with hands-on experimentation from day one. Curriculum Structure

Year 1
You’ll build a strong foundation in classical and modern physics through modules like Classical Mechanics and Electromagnetism and Quantum Physics and Atomic Structure. Lab sessions and project-based assignments help you apply theory to real-world scenarios, while group discussions and field visits introduce you to collaborative learning and industry contexts.

Year 2
This year deepens your understanding of thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and cosmology. You’ll explore modules such as Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics and Astrophysics and Cosmology, while developing advanced lab skills and computational techniques. You’ll also begin preparing for your placement year, supported by the Careers & Employability Team.

Optional Placement Year
You can take a year-long paid placement between Year 2 and Year 3, gaining professional experience and earning an Applied Professional Diploma. Past placements include roles with Rutherford Appleton Laboratories, Rolls-Royce, and HSBC, giving you a competitive edge in the job market.

Year 3
You’ll tackle advanced topics like Materials Science and Nanotechnology and Advanced Computational Physics. This year includes live industry-linked projects, where you’ll work in active research groups and apply your skills to real-world challenges. You’ll also begin scoping your final-year research project.

Final Year
Your final year is all about specialisation and leadership in physics. You’ll complete a major research project, collaborate with industry or academic mentors, and refine your expertise in areas like optics, quantum systems, or data modelling. You’ll graduate with a master’s-level qualification and the confidence to lead in science and technology.
