Curriculum structure
Year 1: Core Foundations in Physics and Astronomy
You’ll begin with Fundamental Physics and Mathematics I & II, covering mechanics, waves, thermal physics, electricity, magnetism, and quantum physics — all supported by linear algebra, calculus, and vector analysis. In Investigating Nature: the Physicist’s Toolbox, you’ll learn Python programming, data analysis, and research ethics while working on a group project. You’ll also take Our Evolving Universe, an introduction to cosmology and astrophysics, exploring the origin and evolution of the universe.
Year 2: Expanding Physics and Astrophysics Knowledge
Second year deepens your understanding with Fundamental Physics and Mathematics III & IV, including thermal physics, special relativity, quantum physics, solids, and electromagnetism. You’ll also study Astrophysical Processes, which covers stellar structure, radiation, and the physics of astronomical objects. Programming and mathematical fluency continue to develop, preparing you for advanced theoretical and observational work.
Year 3: Specialisation and Research
In your third year, you’ll choose from advanced modules such as Dark Matter and Dark Energy, Stellar Structure and Evolution, Galaxies and Cosmology, and Machine Learning. You’ll also complete a major research project, which could involve observational data analysis, astrophysical modelling, or physics education. This year is designed to consolidate your expertise and prepare you for graduate-level careers or further study.
Year 4: Advanced Research and Expertise
The final year focuses on a substantial research project supervised by academic staff, where you’ll investigate a real scientific question. Alongside this, you’ll take advanced modules such as Topics in Mathematical Physics, Quantum Optics and Quantum Computing, or General Relativity, gaining deep expertise and research skills that prepare you for PhD study or high-level industry roles.
