Theoretical Physics MPhys

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

The University of Sheffield

Program Overview

Sheffield’s MPhys in Theoretical Physics is a four-year, research-intensive degree for students who want to explore the mathematical foundations of the universe and gain the skills to lead in quantum science, data-driven industries, or academia.
It’s ideal for students who love abstract thinking and want to dive deep into quantum mechanics, relativity, and advanced mathematical physics while developing hands-on research experience and programming fluency.

Curriculum structure

Year 1: Building the Foundations
You’ll start with Fundamental Physics and Mathematics I & II, covering mechanics, waves, thermal physics, electricity, magnetism, and quantum physics — all underpinned by linear algebra, calculus, and vector analysis. In Investigating Nature: the Physicist’s Toolbox, you’ll learn Python programming, data analysis, and research ethics, and work on a group project such as analysing optical precision instruments. Mathematical Modelling introduces you to the power of equations in describing real-world phenomena across science.

Year 2: Expanding Core Knowledge
You’ll deepen your understanding through Fundamental Physics and Mathematics III & IV, exploring thermal physics, special relativity, quantum physics, solids, and electromagnetism. Programming and analytical skills are further developed, preparing you for advanced theoretical work and research.

Year 3: Specialisation and Research
This year brings a blend of advanced core modules and optional specialisms. You’ll study Advanced Quantum Mechanics and Advanced Electrodynamics, and choose from topics like Statistical Mechanics, Dark Matter and Cosmology, Machine Learning, or Quantum Technologies. You’ll also complete a research project in areas such as data science, physics education, or the Quantum Information Laboratory.

Year 4: Advanced Research and Expertise
The final year is dedicated to a major research project supervised by academic staff, where you’ll investigate a real scientific question. Alongside this, you’ll take advanced modules such as Quantum Optics and Quantum Computing, General Relativity, or Topics in Mathematical Physics, gaining deep expertise and research skills that prepare you for PhD study or high-level industry roles.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students in Sheffield’s MPhys Theoretical Physics program gain practical experience through hands-on lab work, advanced programming, and real-world research — all supported by state-of-the-art facilities and direct industry engagement. From day one, you’ll use Python to model physical systems, collaborate on group projects, and access specialist labs in the Hicks Building. By your final year, you’ll be working on a major research project, often in partnership with industry or national labs, and using tools that reflect current scientific practice.

Here’s how Sheffield brings theoretical physics to life:

  • Specialist Teaching Laboratories: Located in the Hicks Building, these labs support experiments in mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum physics, and more.
  • Python Programming & Data Analysis: Embedded in modules like Investigating Nature: the Physicist’s Toolbox, with applications across all four years.
  • Group Projects: Collaborative work on real-world challenges, including optical systems and data modelling, with emphasis on teamwork and communication.
  • Quantum Information Laboratory: The UK’s first dedicated quantum science lab, available for final-year research projects.
  • Industrial Placement Year (optional): Students have secured placements at CERN, Jaguar Land Rover, Sellafield, EDF Energy, and the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes.
  • Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE): Summer research placements in university labs, exploring topics like dark matter, machine learning, or quantum technologies.
  • Isaac Newton Telescope Access: Opportunities to work with telescopes in La Palma, Canary Islands, for astrophysics-related research.
  • Digital Library Access: 24/7 access to over 1.3 million books and journals, plus tailored study skills support and subject-specific guidance.
  • WRIPA Partnership: Industrial collaborations through the White Rose Industrial Physics Academy, including final-year projects and the UK’s largest physics recruitment fair.
