MSci Mathematics and Physics with professional placement or study abroad

5 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Bath

Program Overview

The MSci Mathematics and Physics with Professional Placement or Study Abroad at the University of Bath is designed for students who genuinely enjoy thinking deeply, solving complex problems, and understanding how the world works at a fundamental level. It brings together strong mathematical theory and modern physics, while also giving you the chance to gain real-world experience through a paid placement or international study, making it an excellent choice if you are aiming for high-impact careers or further research.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1:
In your first year, the focus is on building confidence and a strong academic base in both subjects. You will study core units such as Core Pure and Applied Mathematics A and B alongside Foundations of Physics 1, learning essential ideas in calculus, algebra, mechanics and waves. Through Mathematics and Physics Skills 1, you will also develop problem-solving, data handling and academic skills that are crucial for success in later years.

Year 2:
The second year moves you into more challenging and interesting territory, with units like Advanced Linear Algebra and Differential Equations and Vector Calculus on the mathematics side, and Foundations of Physics 2 in physics. You begin to see how mathematical methods are used to describe real physical systems, strengthening your analytical thinking and preparing you for more specialised study.

Year 3 (Placement or Study Abroad):
This year is a major highlight of the course. You can choose to complete a professional placement, applying your skills in an industry setting, or study abroad at one of Bath’s partner universities. Either option helps you mature academically and personally, while giving you valuable experience that employers and postgraduate programmes highly value.

Year 4:
Returning to Bath, you will study advanced material such as Advanced Quantum Mechanics and take MPhys/MSci Project Preparation, while choosing optional units that reflect your interests. This year is about sharpening your understanding, learning to work more independently, and preparing for your final research project.

Year 5:
Your final year is centred on a substantial MPhys/MSci Research Project, where you work closely with an academic supervisor on a topic you are genuinely curious about. Alongside this, final-year optional units allow you to specialise further in areas of mathematics and physics that align with your future goals, bringing the degree together in a focused and rewarding way.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Experiential learning in Bath’s Mathematics and Physics with professional placement or study abroad is all about applying rigorous theory in real-world contexts. You won’t just study equations and physical laws in lectures — you’ll gain hands-on skills in laboratories, use advanced computational tools, and complete a substantial master’s-level research project. This program is designed to immerse you in both mathematics and physics practice, ensuring you graduate with technical expertise and professional-level experience.

Here’s how Bath integrates experiential learning into the MSci Mathematics and Physics:

  • Specialist laboratories: Access to Bath’s Physics Teaching Laboratories and facilities for optics, condensed matter, and computational physics, where you’ll carry out experiments and develop technical skills.
  • Software & digital tools: Training in Python programming and computational modelling, equipping you with skills widely used in both research and industry.
  • Group projects: Collaborative project work in later years, including preparation for your final-year MSci research project that bridges mathematics and physics.
  • Research project: A substantial master’s-level project in Year 4, allowing you to investigate advanced topics such as Quantum Field Theory, Graphene and Topological Insulators, or Functional Analysis.
  • Library & resources: Full access to Bath’s Library and Institute of Physics-accredited resources, ensuring you’re supported with journals, databases, and professional networks.
  • Institute of Physics accreditation: Your practical training is aligned with professional standards, meeting requirements for Chartered Physicist status.

This combination of hands-on lab work, computational training, and advanced research opportunities means you’ll graduate with the confidence to tackle complex problems and the experience to stand out in competitive job markets.
