Program Overview

The MPhys Physics with Data Science at the University of Leicester is a four-year integrated Master’s degree that blends advanced physics with modern data science. It’s perfect for students who want to apply mathematical modelling, computational tools, and big data techniques to solve problems in physics, technology, and industry, while preparing for careers in research, analytics, and innovation.

Curriculum Structure

Year One

You’ll begin with a strong foundation in physics through modules such as Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, Light and Matter, Waves and Quanta, and Mathematical Physics 1.1 & 1.2. Alongside these, you’ll develop practical skills in Experimental Physics and Physics Skills and Professional Development, with the option to explore Introductory Data Science, Climate Science, or Space Science.

Year Two

This year deepens your knowledge of both physics and data science. You’ll study advanced modules in Thermal Physics, Electromagnetism, and Mathematical Physics, while expanding into Data Science and Analysis. Laboratory sessions and computing workshops continue to sharpen your practical and digital skills, preparing you for independent research and applied data projects.

Year Three

You’ll specialise further with modules such as Machine Learning, Computational Physics, and Advanced Mathematical Physics, while continuing to develop professional skills. You’ll also undertake a major research project, working directly with Leicester’s academics on real-world problems—recent projects have included topics like planet-forming discs, Martian rock analysis, and novel medical ultrasound techniques.

Year Four

Your final year focuses on Master’s-level study, including advanced modules in Big Data Analytics and Applied Computational Physics. You’ll complete a substantial independent research project, often linked to Leicester’s internationally recognised physics and data science research groups, giving you direct involvement in cutting-edge investigations.

Focus Areas

Physics, data science, machine learning, computational physics, big data analytics, mathematical modelling.

Learning Outcomes

Numerical analysis, computational modelling, laboratory experimentation, data interpretation, teamwork, scientific communication, independent research.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

Accredited by the Institute of Physics (IoP), ensuring graduates meet requirements for professional recognition such as Chartered Physicist (CPhys) status.

Reputation (Employability Rankings)

  • Ranked 6th in Physics-related subjects for overall positivity in the NSS 2025 (Times Higher Education methodology applied to NSS 2025 data).
  • Leicester is recognised as Britain’s space city, hosting the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) and Space Park Leicester, both world-leading hubs for Earth observation, data science, and space research.
