The MSci Physics (International Study) at the University of Birmingham lets you explore the fundamental laws of the universe while gaining a global perspective through a year abroad. Curriculum Structure

Year 1

You’ll build a strong foundation in physics and mathematics, covering Classical Mechanics and Relativity, Electromagnetism and Temperature and Matter, and Quantum Mechanics and Optics and Waves. Alongside these, you’ll sharpen your analytical skills in Mathematics for Physicists 1 and gain hands-on experience in Physics Laboratory 1, while also developing communication skills through Physics and Communication Skills 1.

Year 2

The second year deepens your knowledge with advanced modules such as Electromagnetism 2, Quantum Mechanics 2, and Statistical Physics and Entropy. You’ll also explore Optics and Particles and Nuclei, while enhancing your mathematical toolkit in Mathematics for Physicists 2. A semester-long Physics Project and Physics Laboratory 2 will strengthen your experimental and research skills.

Year 3 – International Year

This is your chance to study abroad at a partner university, immersing yourself in another culture while continuing your physics studies. Your modules will be tailored in collaboration with Birmingham and your host institution, ensuring academic continuity while broadening your global outlook.

Year 4

In your final year, you’ll undertake a major Project Dissertation, supported by modules like Project Planning and Preliminary Report and Project Seminar and Viva. You’ll choose from a wide range of advanced options such as Advanced Particle Physics Techniques, Condensed Matter Physics, Relativistic Astrophysics, and Quantum Optics, allowing you to specialise in areas that excite you most. You’ll also join a group research project, working alongside Birmingham’s world-leading academics.
