The MPhys Physics degree is a four-year integrated master's designed for students who want to explore the universe at its deepest levels—from quantum mechanics to cosmology—while preparing for advanced research or technical careers. It’s ideal for those seeking a rigorous academic experience with access to cutting-edge facilities and world-class faculty.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1:
You’ll start with core modules like Dynamics, Electricity & Magnetism, and Quantum Physics and Relativity, alongside Mathematics 1 & 2 and Introduction to Programming. Lab work begins immediately with Year 1 Lab Work (PHYS10180), giving you hands-on experience in experimental physics.
Year 2:
This year builds on your foundation with Quantum Mechanics 2, Electromagnetism 2, Statistical Mechanics, and Mathematics of Waves and Fields. You’ll continue developing lab skills through Year 2 Lab Work (PHYS20180) and begin to explore more advanced theoretical concepts.
Year 3:
You’ll choose from a wide range of optional modules such as Meteorology and Forecasting, Planetary Evolution, and Wave Motion, while continuing with core units like General Physics Skills and Yr3 Physics Laboratory Work (PHYS30180). This year also includes preparation for your final-year research project.
Year 4:
The final year is research-focused, with a major MPhys Project supervised by academic staff. You’ll also take advanced modules like Quantum Field Theory, General Relativity, and Statistical Physics 2, depending on your interests. This year is designed to prepare you for PhD study or high-level technical roles.
Focus areas
Quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, statistical physics, astrophysics, programming, experimental physics, quantum field theory, general relativity.
Learning outcomes
Graduates will master theoretical modelling, experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication—ready for careers in research, technology, or academia.
Professional alignment (accreditation)
Accredited by the Institute of Physics (IOP), meeting the educational requirements for Chartered Physicist status.
Reputation (employability rankings)
Manchester is ranked joint 1st in the UK for physics research (REF 2021), and is one of the most targeted universities by UK graduate employers (Graduate Market 2024). The Department of Physics and Astronomy is associated with 13 Nobel Prize winners and offers one of the largest physics programs in the UK.
The MPhys Physics program is built around hands-on experimentation, advanced computational modelling, and real research engagement. From your first year, you’ll work in purpose-designed labs, use industry-standard software, and collaborate with leading researchers in one of the UK’s most prestigious physics departments. By your final year, you’ll be contributing to real scientific investigations through your extended research project.
Here’s how Manchester equips you with practical experience:
Graduates of the MPhys Physics program are equipped with deep theoretical knowledge, advanced computational skills, and hands-on research experience—making them highly competitive across sectors. Whether you're aiming for academia, industry, or finance, typical roles include research scientist, data analyst, software engineer, and patent attorney.
