In this course, you'll delve into the role of the police as a means of control, and critically analyze the various models used to achieve this end. These models include preserving law and order, detecting and reducing crime, engaging with communities, and examining the function of police at local, national, and international levels.

You'll gain an in-depth understanding of the criminal justice system and how different agencies, including the police, probation service, courts, and prisons, interact with one another. By taking a theoretical approach to policing, this degree will provide you with a strategic understanding of its systems, giving you an advantage in your future career.

In addition to these foundational topics, you'll also explore contemporary issues of policing, such as homicide, cybercrime, gangs, organized crime, and mental health.

Completing our degree program provides a strong foundation for a career within the police force or the wider criminal justice system. While obtaining a criminology degree typically leads to employment within the broader criminal justice field, the skills acquired during the course, including data research, critical analysis, oral, written and visual communication, reasoned debate, understanding theoretical concepts, and policy analysis, are transferable to many other areas of employment.

Recent graduates of our criminology courses have secured successful employment with various organizations, such as youth offender teams, the police service, the probation service, social work, local authority crime analyst departments, victim support schemes, and drug mentoring. The degree can also lead to career paths such as law, consultancy, and detective work.

Although our BA Criminology (Policing and Investigations) program is not a pre-requisite for joining the police force, completing this degree can enhance your applications for police-related jobs after graduation.
