BSc Economics

3 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

Birkbeck University of London

Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Economics at Birkbeck is a theory-rich, application-focused degree designed to develop strong analytical, mathematical, and statistical skills. It prepares students to tackle real-world economic issues with confidence and clarity.

Over three years (or four part-time), students progress from foundational topics in current economic problems, IT, and quantitative techniques, to intermediate studies in macroeconomics, microeconomics, international economics, and advanced econometrics. In the final year, they explore applied statistics and choose from a range of specialisms including behavioural economics, development economics, financial markets, public policy, and political economy.

Teaching, Learning & Assessment

The Economics degree at Birkbeck is taught through evening classes, allowing students to combine academic study with employment or other daytime commitments. Learning is led by faculty who are active researchers in economics, ensuring exposure to current debates and applied economic theory.

Students engage with a mix of lectures, seminars, and computer-based workshops, aimed at building analytical depth and practical data-handling capabilities. The curriculum emphasizes progression—from grasping economic concepts to applying econometric methods in real-world scenarios.

Assessment methods vary by module and include written examinations, problem-solving assignments, data analysis projects, essays, and occasionally oral presentations. Final-year modules often involve the practical use of economic models and software tools, with an emphasis on applying theory to policy or financial contexts.

Birkbeck ranked among the top 25 UK institutions for Economics and Econometrics research in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework
