Economics BSc Hons with Placement

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

London South Bank University

Program Overview

The London South Bank University (LSBU) BSc (Hons) Economics programme gives you the chance to explore how economic theory and practice shape real-world decisions, using industry-standard tools like Bloomberg, Stata and Excel. Perfect for students curious about finance, data-driven analysis and global markets, you’ll work on pressing issues such as the digital economy, international trade and policy making.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1:

You’ll start by building foundational knowledge through modules such as Economic Concepts, Finance and the Economy, and Business Mathematics. These courses allow you to understand the nuts and bolts of supply and demand, financial systems and develop your quantitative and analytical skills from day one. You’ll also complete the LSBU Discovery Project which gives you an early taste of independent research and problem-solving in economics.

Year 2:

In your second year you’ll dive into more advanced modules like Introduction to Econometrics, Microeconomic Modelling, Macroeconomic Modelling, and optional courses such as The Digital Economy. This means you’ll learn how to analyse real data, model economic outcomes and understand how digital change impacts markets and policy. These will sharpen your ability to apply theory in real contexts and prepare you for more specialised work.

Year 3

The placement year gives students the opportunity to gain paid, real-world work experience with employers in the public, private, or voluntary sector. It enhances professional skills, industry awareness, and graduate employability by allowing students to apply academic learning in a practical setting.

Year 4:

In the final year you’ll explore specialist topics like Behavioural Economics, Global Finance and Technology, Development Economics and undertake a capstone project (such as the Challenge Project). Here you’ll apply everything you’ve learned—qualitative, quantitative and critical skills—to issues such as financial innovation, inequality and global trade. This is your chance to shape your own area of expertise and get ready for your career or further study.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At London South Bank University the BSc (Hons) Economics programme is designed for you to actively apply economic concepts from day one, using industry-standard tools and working in environments that mirror professional practice. With access to a Bloomberg Suite and econometrics software (Stata), you’ll learn to handle real-time data, simulate market decisions and deliver analytics in the same way economic practitioners do. On top of that, the university’s central London location and business-school networks offer live case studies, guest lectures, and company-facing projects that enhance your readiness for the workplace.

Here’s how your practical skills will be developed through specific facilities and experiences:

  • A dedicated Bloomberg Suite: You’ll use Bloomberg terminals to monitor and trade in simulated real-markets, as well as analyse data cuts for modules like risk management and financial econometrics.

  • Econometrics and data-modelling workspaces: Software such as Stata is used in the course to model macroeconomic and financial shocks, enabling you to translate theory into analytics that matter.

  • Placement and internship support: For students who choose the “with Placement” pathway there is an option to take a year in industry, gaining work-based learning, professional development and hands-on business experience.

  • Business school enterprise spaces: The Clarence Centre for Enterprise & Innovation and the Business Solutions Centre provide workshop, presentation and mentoring spaces where you can apply your economics knowledge to real business problems and collaborate on consulting-style projects.

  • Central London campus & live case-studies: Located in Southwark, LSBU’s Business School uses its London location to bring visiting professionals, live projects and industry input into your modules for a dynamic and current economics education.
