This degree gives you a strong grounding in modern economic principles—combining microeconomics, macroeconomics, quantitative methods and real-world data analysis. It’s ideal for students who enjoy mathematics and statistics, are curious about how economies work and want to build strong analytical and communication skills for a broad range of careers.
Curriculum structure:
Year 1: In your first year you’ll take modules such as Principles of Microeconomics, Approaches to Economic Analysis and Current Issues in Economics. These help you explore how market forces work, how economic actors behave and how to start thinking in data-driven ways.
Year 2: During the second year you’ll move into more analytical territory: for example you’ll study Intermediate Microeconomics, Economic Policy and Problems and Decision-Making in Economics, building your ability to evaluate policy, analyse markets and apply intermediate quantitative tools.
Year 3: In your final year you’ll select advanced modules such as Advanced Microeconomics, Advanced Macroeconomics and possibly a project or dissertation module. This enables you to specialise, conduct independent research and prepare for either further study or employment with confidence.
From day one you’ll engage in projects, apply data tools, network with employers and even spend a full year working in industry if you choose the Year in Industry option. These opportunities are supported by dedicated employment services, modules built around real data and the chance to study abroad. Here’s how it breaks down:
A Year in Industry option (minimum of 40 weeks) that enables you to gain live work experience, build your professional network and return to complete your degree with enhanced employability.
An Employability Module and mentoring scheme where you’ll be matched with an employer mentor, attend skills workshops and network with alumni and industry leaders.
Data-focused modules such as Exploring Economic Data and Current Issues in Economics, which use real datasets and industry-grade software (available via Swansea’s network) to give you experience in statistical and econometric analysis.
Opportunities to study abroad or take a year in industry, giving you global exposure, broader skills and deeper insights into economics in practice.
Full access to Swansea’s library and digital resources: students report 92% + positive feedback for access to subject-specific resources and software.
The university’s dedicated Careers & Employability team supports students with one-to-one coaching, CV and interview workshops, internship and placement advice, and access to the Swansea Employability Academy (SEA).
According to official statistics: 85% of BA/BSc Economics graduates were in employment or further study within 15 months of graduating. Also, the average full-time salary was £30,000 for Economics graduates 15 months after completing the degree.
Swansea University has industry ties and business partnerships: for example, major collaborations with employers like Fujitsu and Admiral Group that support internship, hackathon and employment opportunities.
Long-term accreditation value: The programme is accredited by professional bodies such as Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) for certain pathways, enhancing your professional credentials.
Graduation outcomes: The Department advertises that Economics graduates from Swansea are “poised for financially rewarding and mentally challenging employment opportunities.”
