  • The program uses a 50% coursework and 50% exam assessment structure.
  • For second and final-year modules, the assessment includes extended essays, allowing students to explore topics in-depth.
  • Final Year Project: Students complete a final-year project with the guidance of a personal supervisor, which allows for independent research on a specific economic issue or question.

  • Quantitative Analysis Software: All computer labs are equipped with extensive software for econometric and quantitative analysis.
  • Economics Databases: Students have access to a variety of economics databases and extensive collections of textbooks and e-books through the Albert Sloman Library.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Placement Year (Optional)

Students have the opportunity to undertake a placement year during their third year, gaining practical experience in a professional setting. While students are responsible for securing their placements, the university provides support through the Department of Economics and the Employability and Careers Centre. Notably, students who complete a placement year pay only 20% of the usual tuition fee for that year.

Study Abroad Year (Optional)

Alternatively, students can opt for a study abroad year at one of the university's partner institutions worldwide. This experience allows students to immerse themselves in different cultures and educational systems, enhancing their global perspective. Students who spend a full year abroad pay only 15% of the usual tuition fee to Essex for that year and do not pay tuition fees to the host university

Essex Equity Fund (EEF)

The Essex Equity Fund offers students hands-on experience in investment banking. Participants engage in an investment bootcamp led by alumni who are now investment bankers, pitch investment recommendations, and monitor their success. This initiative provides practical exposure to financial markets and decision-making processes. ​
