4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program
This degree offers you the tools to explore how economies evolve, uncover why individuals and firms make certain decisions, and examine major global issues such as inequality, financial crises and climate change. If you’re someone who enjoys working with data, modelling real-world problems and asking probing questions about policy and markets, this programme is a great fit for you.
Curriculum structure:
Year 1: You’ll start with modules like Principles of Microeconomics, Principles of Macroeconomics, and a choice between Mathematics for Economics Mode A/B, plus Statistics for Economics. These introduce you to economic thinking, developing your quantitative skills, and help you begin to interpret real-world economic behaviour.
Year 2: In the second year you’ll study modules such as Intermediate Microeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics, Introductory Econometrics, and options like Behavioural Economics or Mathematical Economics. Here, you dig deeper into data analysis, economic modelling, and apply tools to policy and firm-level issues.
Year 3: (Year in Industry) You spend a year in industry, supported by a dedicated placement team and a programme designed to ensure that students gain experience in the functional areas and industries of their choice
Year 4: In your final year you’ll take advanced modules like Applied Econometrics, and have optional choices such as Financial Economics and Asset Pricing, Environmental Economics and Green Finance, or Labour Economics. You’ll also typically work on a dissertation, specialising your knowledge and engaging in independent research before entering employment or further study.
On the University of Kent BSc (Hons) Economics and Finance with a Year in Industry programme, you’ll be actively supported to build real-world skills through group projects, live data analysis and workplace experience — all backed by specialist facilities that prepare you for the demands of economics, finance and policy roles. From early on you’ll apply statistical software, engage in seminars using real case-studies, and you’ll have the option of a Year in Industry or Year Abroad to deepen your professional experience. Here’s how the programme brings that to life:
Students work in state-of-the-art IT suites in the Sibson Building, using software packages such as R and Stata to undertake applied econometrics and big-data analytics.
You’ll participate in seminars and workshops around modules like Data Analysis for Economists, and Strategy and Games, involving group presentations, interactive tasks and real-life economic decision-making models.
The programme offers an optional Year in Industry (between year 2 and year 3) where you spend 9-12 months working in a real organisation, often paid, and receive structured support from the Careers & Employability service.
You’ll have access to the Templeman Library and digital resources specially curated for economics students, enabling you to undertake your Stage 3 dissertation or research project with strong support.
