BSc Business Economics with Study Abroad

4 Years On Campus Bachelors Program

University of Leicester

Program Overview

This degree lets you explore the driving forces behind income, wealth and economic well-being, and equips you with the tools to analyse how economic policies affect society, business and government. It’s designed for students who enjoy logical thinking and data-driven insight, and want to build strong analytical and communication skills with a real-world edge.

Curriculum structure:

Year 1: In the first year you’ll study modules such as Contemporary Issues in Economics, Finance and Business, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Maths for Economics 1 & 2, Statistics for Economists and Introduction to Economic Data Analysis. These are built to give you a firm foundation in economic thinking and the quantitative and statistical techniques essential for later years.

Year 2: In year two your learning deepens with core modules like Introductory Econometrics, Intermediate Microeconomics, Intermediate Macroeconomics, Game Theory, Firms, Markets and Welfare, and optional modules such as Labour Economics, Environmental and Resource Economics and Data Science. You’ll apply mathematics and statistics directly to economic models, start exploring data in context and make real connections between theory and policy.

Year 3: (Year Abroad) Studying abroad is not just for people who are interested in travelling and meeting new people. It is about acquiring life skills that are becoming increasingly significant for a wide range of jobs in our modern globalised society. Whether you go on to a career in the private, public or third sector - or plough your own furrow as an entrepreneur – you will find the experience invaluable.

Final Year: In the final year you’ll take core modules including Communicating Economics, Advanced Microeconomics and Advanced Macroeconomics, and choose from options like International Trade, Industrial Economics, Public Economics, Behavioural Economics or International Finance. This year lets you specialise your knowledge, carry out independent analysis, and prepare for postgraduate study or employment by showcasing your skills in real economic contexts.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

  • You’ll have the option of a Year in Industry or Year Abroad variant, enabling you to spend your third year in a workplace or overseas university setting — a major boost to practical skills and employer exposure.

  • In Years 2 and 3 you’ll study modules like Introductory Econometrics, Methods for Data Analytics 1 & 2, Data Analytics in Practice, and Economic Forecasting, which involve applying statistical software and large datasets to real‐world economic policy and business questions.

  • The School of Business has dedicated career support: the School of Business Careers Team runs mentorships, employer engagement and support during placements to make sure your professional development is genuine and effective.

  • You’ll study in the new £16 million Brookfield campus with modern teaching, computing and collaborative spaces in Leicester’s School of Business, ensuring you have the physical and digital resources to work like analysts and economists do in industry.
